Ypsilanti holding town hall next week to discuss police chief search

By AnnArbor.com Staff

The city of Ypsilanti, which has been without a police chief since June 1, will hold a town hall meeting on Tuesday to find out what residents want to see in their next chief. City officials say they want to involve citizens in the process as much as possible.

City Manager Ed Koryzno said in a release that he hopes to fill the position by Jan. 4, 2010.

Matt Harshberger, who was Ypsilanti's police chief since 2006, left at the end of May to become the public safety director in Pittsfield Township. Tuesday's meeting will take place at 7 p.m. in the council chambers. Terry McGinn from Career Directions, the consultant hired to assist in the process, will be moderating the session.

The Ypsilanti City Council is expected to decide the desired "competencies" for the next chief at its Sept. 1 meeting. A list of desired competencies is online at www.cityofypsilanti.com. The police chief search committee includes several city officials, as well as police chiefs from other departments.

i disagree that the last chief didn't think this. he had a limited budget. used resources such as the volunteer service corp (vsc) well. just keep an eye out for the vsc shirts around heritage festival this weekend. i think interim lt.deridder would be an excellant choice. why spend the $$, which the city doesn't have, to search. dading!

I know that the city is working with less budget, but the new Chief should set priorities. Downtown should be a given, but the last Chief didnt appear to think so. We need constant presence of police here, and its not happening. Panhandlers, drugs, prositiutes etc. need to be chased away!!
