Ypsilanti family of 8 displaced after house fire
A family of eight people escaped a burning home through the windows in Ypsilanti early Friday morning.
Firefighters from the Ypsilanti and Ypsilanti Township fire departments responded to a call reporting the fire at 833 Short St. at 3:30 a.m.
Crews reported “heavy fire” and black smoke were visible on one side of the single-story house when they arrived.
Ypsilanti Fire Department Capt. Dan Cain said the fire was under control within 45 minutes. No one was injured.
“Luckily they were able to get out the windows,” Cain said. “It’s not always the way you’d want to get out, but when you have to get out, you get out.”
Crews were on the scene for two hours, according to Cain.
Cain said the fire, which originated in the kitchen, is under investigation, but did not appear suspicious.
The fire caused about $35,000 in damages, Cain said, and the home is uninhabitable.
The Washtenaw-Lenawee Chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the family with food and lodging.
