FanFest tailgate offers fun, games, and small taste of Michigan history

By James Dickson

AnnArbor.com has been known to frequent some of the best tailgates and pre-game scenes in town on Football Saturdays.

This week, we went to the FanFest tailgate, at the southwest corner of Stadium and Main, kitty-corner from the Big House. IMG College hosts the weekly event, which also features a life-sized Charles Woodson bobblehead, courtesy of the Big Ten Network. 104.3 WOMC, which broadcasts Michigan football on the radio, also stages its pre-game show at the FanFest site.

Check out AnnArbor.com's video about the FanFest.

FanFest offers two activities that give young and old tailgaters the chance to act out their pigskin fantasies. Would-be gunslingers, whether imitating former Michigan QB Tom Brady or Denard "Shoelace" Robinson, can toss first downs and touchdowns at the Quarterback Challenge, while pass-catchers can re-enact Desmond Howard's diving, fourth-down catch against Notre Dame at the Hail Mary Challenge.

FanFest also has a place for history, even if it is a small one. In addition to the banner celebrating Michigan's 11 national championship football teams — the first in 1901, the last in 1997 — another banner honors Michigan's three Heisman Trophy winners, running back Tom Harmon (1940), wide receiver Desmond Howard (1991) and cornerback Charles Woodson (1997). Even though Harmon is best known for "Ol 98," a jersey he wore with such distinction that it was retired even before his last game at Michigan, FanFest features a picture from Harmon's sophomore year, when he wore no. 6.

It's good to remember Michigan Football when it was good.
