Willow Run Airport facing 'financial disaster'
Willow Run Airport in Wayne County's Van Buren Township faces severe financial problems that will mean significant budget cuts and could result in its shutdown, The Detroit News reports today.
In the article, Thomas Naughton, chief financial officer of the Wayne County Airport Authority, said Willow Run "continues to be a financial disaster."
Traffic at the airport is down significantly, the article says, because of automakers' financial woes and a drop in business from general aviation and charter operators. The volume of cargo handled at the airport is down more than 50 percent compared to last year, which was far below the level of the year before, the article says.
"We're looking at everything, including privatizing, leasing the facility out, coming up with alternative uses," Willow Run spokesman Scott Wintner told The News.

Unfortunately, "history" doesn't pay the bills.

We could help Willow Run by shutting down the competition from the Ann Arbor airport. We could keep a little of it open to serve blimps and helicopters.

dude if that airport closes the state of Michigan will lose a massive load of history I for one remember my father taking me to the air shows and the museums, I think the airport should be eligible for some historic grant or something seeing as how it helped the soldiers of World War 2. Just my thought
