You can now download five University of Michigan courses to your iPhone, iPad or iPod to peruse at your own pace.

The courses are free. They can be downloaded using the iTunes U app, a program that offers free education content. They're also available online at Open.Michigan.

Courses for download include:

  • Corporate Finance for Health Care Administrators
  • Introduction to Information Studies
  • Introduction to Statistics and Data Analysis
  • Laboratory Methods for Clinical Microbiology
  • Structures 2

The courses are part of a growing trend to offer university content free online. U-M is already participating in Coursera, an online platform that allows universities, including Stanford and Princeton, to offer free courses online to anyone. U-M also made the Epistles of St. Paul, one of the school's oldest artifacts, available for download on Apple devices.

Very interesting how technology is merging with education. I was just talking with my friend, a teacher in Chicago, about how she uses iPads in the classroom at her elementary school.

There's a lot of additional free material available through the University's Open.Michigan site: http://open.umich.edu/

Like the sound of it, but went to the Coursera website and searched for the UM course listed and it is not there. What is correct way to access the courses you listed in your article?

It looks like UM has about 5 courses currently listed on Coursera for this semester and spring semester: https://www.coursera.org/umich

The courses featured in this article are not through Coursera; they are through an Apple app or through the Michigan Open link listed above. Coursera was mentioned as something else that UM is doing.

On your iPhone or iPad find the iTunes U app. If this app is missing, go to the App store and search for iTunes U. Download the app and run. Inside of iTunes U click the catalog or the center of the screen on first run. Search the iTunes U store for "University of Michigan" You will see the results and the courses listed above in this article. Hope this helps.

When UofM has caught up to M.I.T. or even Stanford in such content, THEN it will have earned coverage. Until then, this is a total joke.
