Washtenaw County has highest density of obstetricians in Michigan
Washtenaw County has the highest density of OB/GYN doctors for its resident population in Michigan, according to a recent article by Bridge Magazine.
There are 130 obstetricians that practice in the county, which is more than 62 out of the state’s 83 counties combined.
That means there’s one OB/GYN for every 2,653 residents in Washtenaw County, and one OB/GYN for every 22 pregnant women.
In Michigan’s northeast lower peninsula and eastern upper peninsula, residents only have one or two practicing obstetricians to serve the entire county, a result of medical economics and a rapidly aging population in the northern part of the state.

Sorry! I mean: "than their colleagues" (typed too fast).

Would it be right to assume that these doctors also perform proportionately more hysterectomies and cesarean sections that their colleagues in the rest of the state?

No brainer here. The U is just down the street and is a teaching hospital. Most don't leave because this is the best place to be to be a doctor and make the most money while every where else needs a doctor? You will here. Sad isn't it?

So does having more of these specialists in the area drive down costs via competition? Or, is it like attorneys, Market forces seem to have little impact on their prices?

Is the author really this obtuse? I bet the number of cardiothoracic surgeons placing LVAD's is higher in this county than the rest of Michigan also. I bet the number of Heart transplant surgeons by county is higher hear and the number of Hepatologists is higher hear. Guess what, when you have a top 10 hospital in the WORLD, you tend to get patients traveling long distances to come, which means high number of doctors per what ever distorted population you choose.
