Lon Horwedel | AnnArbor.com
In honor of Veterans Day, an observance took place this morning front of the entrance to VA Ann Arbor Healthcare in Ann Arbor.
The observance featured prayer, the Pledge of Allegience, a 21-gun salute, the playing of Taps from the Washtenaw County Honor Guard, and a speech from keynote speaker Melvin R. Kearney II, a veteran of two tours of duty in Operation Iraqi Freedom, who now works for the U.S. Army Wounded Warrior Program.

This is a very touching and heartwarming celebration. My dad served in the Marine Corp in WWII and is the gentleman sitting in the wheelchair with the white hat at the outdoor ceremony. He went over to the VA Hospital today and visited "the guys who weren't as lucky as I was to come home safely". He is my hero and I am so proud of him.

To those who are no longer with us. To those of us who have borne the load. To those of us who are forgotten almost as soon as we are home or out of uniform. To those of us who still suffer, years later for their service and dedication. Never forget. Today is not a holiday like Christmas or New Years. Today is a time for somber reflection and a little acknowledgment. We have a bond like few on earth ever get the chance to have. Always remember.

My undying gratitude goes out to all of the men and women in all branches of the military; those on active duty and retired alike.
