U.S. Post office on West Stadium reopened after 'suspicious package' found Friday morning

By Paula Gardner

This story was updated at 7:56 a.m.

The U.S. Post Office on West Stadium in Ann Arbor was evacuated Friday morning as police investigated reports of a suspicious package, but the scene has been cleared.

The package was found by a postal worker who was sorting mail at 4:30 a.m., said Lt. Renee Bush of the Ann Arbor Police Department.

The package was in a bag and wrapped in plastic, she said.

"It was isolated on the rear dock," Bush said.

The building was evacuated, Bush said, and the Michigan State Police Bomb Squad was called to the scene.

They determined that the package was not dangerous.

Parking areas were sealed off at the site, 2075 W. Stadium, according to WXYZ-TV.

No other buildings were evacuated, Bush said.

"We're asking people who have to do post office business to take an alternative route," Bush said as the incident unfolded.

@xmo: I agree with you about combat pay for postal workers and I think they should get paid more, anyway, and I also feel our military women and men should get paid more, too, for doing all they do. But I am guessing that the postal workers are faring better on the salary scale. Again, all people who serve the country in any form of public service should get paid better and better treatment which includes not getting bashed by negative comments on a2.com and other places. The public servants (except for some of your elected officials who make policies) are not your enemy.

I thought that when President Obama was elected that the world would love us and stuff like this wouldn't happen? So much for Hope and Change. I feel sorry for the Postal Workers who don't get Combat Pay while fighting the war on Terrorism!

Like my carpool buddy asked: "Isn't every package 'suspicious' if you don't know what is inside it?""

Well, what was the package? Or was it left over from last night that some postal clerk did not want to move? You going to keep us in dark?

USPS also uses other shippers (ie. FEDEX) for their overnight packages which are then re-delivered back to post offices once a private company moves them efficiently across the country in one night.

To follow up on Paula's comment, some shipping providers use the United States Postal Service (USPS) for the final (expensive) leg of the delivery to the home address. This is particularly true in rural areas.

I only have an unconfirmed report - a caller said it was a watch that had been sent via at least one other shipping provider before ending up in the USPS system.

Is the post office now open or is it still restricted?
