University of Michigan police looking for missing historical marker
University of Michigan police are asking for the public's help to find a historical marker that went missing sometime over the past five months.
Police said a bronze plaque was removed from its mount. The plaque dates back to 1925 and commemorates the Michigan "Scabbard & Blade" regiment.
The plaque is about 2 feet by 2 feet. It was adhered to a large rock at the base of the flagpole at the north edge of the Diag.
A value of the plaque was not available today. Police released information about the theft this week and asked anyone who has information on the whereabouts of the plaque to call campus police at 734-763-1131.

Several years ago the bronze bust of our Nobel Prize winner Martinus Veltman was ripped from its outdoor display mount on the UM campus. The theft was reported to Campus Police who looked for it in vain until by fortunate, inadvertent coincidence some months later, it was found in the custody of the Ann Arbor Police. They had retrieved the bust the day after the original theft as a consequence of another incident and had put it into their evidence storage. Eventually, after more time had passed, someone connected the dots and we got Veltman back. He's now safely behind glass inside Randall Lab.

That's a lousy photo of the plaque. Phil Dokas has a much clearer one, on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dokas/502635610/sizes/l/

With the recent theft of part of the football field turf and now this, maybe some company in A2 should consider sponsoring a "tip line" and offering a cash reward leading to the arrest of the thieves. Also, hopefully UMPD or AAPD has the benefit of video cameras covering areas of campus.
