University of Michigan police investigate attempted robbery near Kresge Business Library
Two men attempted to rob a University of Michigan alumnus early this morning, the University of Michigan Department of Public Safety reported.
The man was in the 1000 block of Monroe on the north side of Kresge Business Library in the Ross School of Business complex at 1:30 a.m. when he was approached by two strangers, a campus crime alert said.
The strangers demanded money, but the alumnus kept walking and didn't give them anything, the alert said. No weapon was seen.
The would-be robbers were last seen walking west toward South State Street.
The alumnus described the men as black, 16 to 18 years old, and skinny. One was wearing baggy clothing with a navy blue baseball cap with an unknown logo on the front. The other was wearing wearing a gray T-shirt and black backpack.
Anyone with information is asked to call campus police at 734-763-1131.

U-M DPS is way too busy writing seat belt tickets or running radar for this sort of activity. Priorities!

I have never seen a police officer on foot or bike patrol anywhere near the business or law schools. They drive by, in cars with windows rolled up, talking on their cell phones, so they are easy to avoid, if that's your game. No presence on the paths. Not only that, if you call them to report a person who appears, at least to you, to be suspicious, they call you the next day to get a description. I'm surprised there isn't more crime.

Hopefully, the UM Police chief is watching crime trends on campus and assigning officers to where it appears a lot of criminal incidents muggings, arson) are occurring. It appears that certain areas are frequently reported and are "hot spots" for crimogens. Also, the most effective approach to policing the area, as well as the area around the Union,Angell, and the Diag is not the patrol car approach, but instead is the community policing approach, especially via foot patrol and the use of bicycles. And speaking of the community policing approach, why not consider a "sub-station," a conspicuous one, in the "hot spot" area(s)?

But but there's no such thing as violent crime on campus. No need for self defense there. Even if there was, and I stress that this is just a fable (like multiple safety systems failing on oil rigs), the UM DPS will be johnny on the spot to prevent it, right? right..... 1*
