University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers ranks 14th on U.S. News 'America's Best Hospitals' list
U.S. News & World Report magazine ranked the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers 14th in the country for the third year in a row, the magazine announced today.
U-M nabbed the No. 1 spot in the Detroit metropolitan area.
It’s the 17th year U-M has gotten a spot on the honor roll of “America’s Best Hospitals.”
The magazine drew from a pool of 4,825 medical facilities and ranked at least 140 in one of 16 specialties judged.
"To be nationally recognized in so many areas is a clear demonstration of the dedication of our faculty and staff," says Doug Strong, director and chief executive officer of the U-M Hospitals and Health Centers, in a statement. "We're extremely proud to be recognized for the strength of our efforts year after year."
For more information on ranked hospitals, read the U.S. News Best Hospitals story on its website.
U-M’s top ranking was for ear, nose and throat diseases: it ranked ninth in the country for the second year in a row.
Other areas ranked by the magazine include:
- Specialty care at U-M's Geriatrics Center (ranked 11th)
- Comprehensive Cancer Center (ranked 13th)
- Cardiovascular Center (ranked 12th)
- Kellogg Eye Center's ophthalmologic care (ranked 16th)
- Gynecology (ranked 12th)
- Pulmonology (ranked 14th)
- Rheumatology and urology, both ranked 15th
- Diabetes/endocrinology and rehabilitation, both ranked 17th
- Gastroenterology and psychiatry, both ranked 20th
- Orthopedics (ranked 25th)
- Neurology/neurosurgery (ranked 27th)

Lets be fair about this and compare Uof M Hospital with others like it.there are thousands of small community hospitals all over the U.S..They do the job well but they're not the Medical Center for all kinds of reasons. Some people choose to think the MC is the greatest that there is ANYWHERE.To me the ranking of 14th among 'like" hospitals sort of puts that notion to rest. You're a little late with this survey.saw it on the "net" last week.

That surprises me, I've never gotten good care there and seeing a close family member hospitalized there six times in 8 months, it's hard to believe that anyone leaves with a positive feeling. I change the channel whenever I see their commercials touting the "Michigan Difference" because I don't know who gets good care, certainly not me or my family.

I must agree with you, Michigander. I have been hospitalized at all three hospitals at some point. Chelsea is, by FAR the best in patient care. I have had TERRIBLE experiences at UofM.

A minor point but it appears UofM was tied with Vanderbilt for #14.

I would be interested to see how the UofM Hospital ranks in terms of patient care and satisfaction.

@Kara. I would look for patient ratings that are independent of the UM PR machine.

Agreed. Chelsea Hospital, in my experience, has better patient care overall...AND the food served to patients is great!

The other reply is correct - Hospital Compare does have some patient rating data. (US News also has it on their site - see http://health.usnews.com/best-hospitals/university-of-michigan-hospitals-and-health-centers-6440110/patient-satisfaction for the U-M ratings. But we have posted much more patient rating data on our website - including data not available anywhere else, and data from parents of pediatric patients, and from outpatients, which aren't included in Hospital Compare. DBH I looked at those ratings and it didn't appear to me that there is much difference in satisfaction between the three HC centers. When you look at would the patient recommend the hospital to others, the rank is Chelsea 85%, UM 83% and St Joe at 80%. I know Chelsea has a great reputation but I don't think the ratings indicate any one is much better than others, all about the same but I would add that when you account for size, services rendered may suffer some. I have used UMMC for a couple decades and am totally satisfied. On the other hand I have heard some bad stories too. Thanks for the link.

Check out http://www.hospitalcompare.hhs.gov/ . I compared UM, SJMH and Chelsea. All in all, UM came in 3rd of the 3, with Chelsea the best.

Where were we ranked in previous years? Are we improving or declining?

This is the third year in a row at #14 - and the first time we were ranked in metro Detroit. The first metro Detroit ranking, released earlier this year, did not include Washtenaw County. Kara Gavin UMHS Public Relations
