United Way of Washtenaw County announces new president

By Cole Bertsos

It was announced today Saline resident Pam Smith will be taking over as president for the United Way of Washtenaw County, according to board members.

Board Chair Kristen Holt delivered the news today that Smith accepted the position, and will be leaving her current job as the executive director for the Child Care Network, where she has been since 2008.

Smith will be taking over the position from current president Sandy Rupp, who stepped down earlier this year to spend more time with her family. Rupp held the post for seven years.

Before her position with CCN, Smith also acted as director of public affairs and marketing at the Ann Arbor Hands-On-Museum for 9 years.

"I have long admired the contributions that United Way makes to our community and am excited to provide leadership for enhancing its visibility and sustainability," Smith said in a press release. "United Way is a catalyst for community collaboration and works to make a measurable, meaningful difference in our local community."

While I am sad to see Sandy go (what a fun professional), I would like to welcome Pam to her new position. I am sure that you will do a great job fulfilling the mission and vision of the UWWC and have a blast doing it. I hope to meet you soon!

Pam did a great job at Child Care network and the HOM. She is well respected in the community and will surely do great things for UWWC.

Pam, no doubt, will make a wonderful contribution to our community. I know her as my daughter is friends with her daughter. Without a doubt, she set the bar at parenting. I am sure she will bring that integrity to the UW. Best to you, Pam.

The remark made by annarbor28 regarding Ms. Smith's hairstyle reflects everything that is wrong about the annarbor.com's "discussions" That comment wasn't meant to discuss the article, it was just a hateful remark meant to belittle someone. I suspect that annarbor28 has never met Ms. Smith, knows nothing about her or her history (other than what he read in this article), yet this person feels that it is appropriate to make fun of someone's appearance. I'm sure there is some sort of payoff emotionally for annarbor28, bullies usually find some sort of gratification in their behavior. Even sadder is that the moderation on this board allows this to stand. I would challenge the moderators to explain how that comment adds to the discussion or improves the quality of this venue. What is the reasoning in not deleting those kinds of comments?

I agree. There was no reason at all for that to be posted.

Every UW is different and the Washtenaw United Way is exceptional. Their incredible integrity allows people like me to donate with complete trust in their staff and mission. I knew Jim and then Sandy and the amazing dedication they both had for the community and tremendous effort they made to fund-raise as well as maximize the value of every dollar they send out to the community. The disastrous socialist FOODSTAMP PRESIDENT has left more families in trouble then ever, which makes the WUW's mission even more vital as the American work force plummets to the lowest levels since 1965! Many companies who's leadership supports the wonderful, giving mission of the WUW to establish goals for tax deductible fundraising among staff. They may host fun runs, competitions and luncheons to bring attention to this great cause but regardless of the good spirit and humor with which it is done, it will always another "problem" for some. ...and a goal is not "pressure"... The bitter haters writing here worried that some evil corporate leader is trying to drag a few nickels out of their dusty purses are pathetic. Keep your nickels and pray you're not the next family to ask for the kind of help the WUW provides to the poor every day. Welcome Kristen!

At two large corporations we were heavily pressured (one company 'suggested' the amount and it was 4 figures) to contribute and after that I've never wanted to have anything to do with UW.

I wish her luck. As for me I limit my donations to 4 star charities as measured by the Charity Navigator. Its my easy one stop research source. Maybe one day the UWWC will get back there.
