'Unabomber' online auction ends Thursday - and the killer's hoodie leads the bidding

By Paula Gardner

"Unabomber" Theodore Kaczynski's hand-written copy of his manifesto fetched one of the first bids in the online auction of the serial killer's belongings — but with less than 24 hours before the auction closes, that document is not the highest-priced item.

Instead, the top-seller as of 5:30 p.m. Wednesday was the hoodie and sunglasses belonging to the former Ann Arbor resident and University of Michigan student.

Some letters from Theodore Kaczynski, a.k.a. the Unabomber, a U-M alumnus, are already cataloged in the University of Michigan Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library's special collections unit.

The hoodie/sunglasses lot was selling for $20,025. Two of his diplomas — from U-M and Harvard — were selling for $5,003.

Kaczynski's belonging are listed for sale by the U.S. government in an effort to generate funds to compensate victims from his crime spree, which in addition to the deaths also injured 23 people from 1978 to 1995.

One bombing injured two researchers at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Kaczynski owes at least $15 million in restitution.

The auction contains 58 lots, and all have generated bids. Among the items: A welding mask and deerskin scabbard ($564), Smith-Corona portable typewriter ($11,100), manual for wilderness survival ($2,615), and letters to and from his brother — who also provided the tip that led to his capture ($953).

All of the prices were current as of 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. The auction ends on Thursday, June 2, starting at 9 a.m. Central.

Wierd! I agree, why would anyone want it?? As an aside, I'm old enough to remember when a "hoodie" was called a "hooded sweatshirt"

"One bombing injured two researchers at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor." Nope. One researcher and one professor. You'd think annarbor.com would look into details like this, since the researcher is now one of the most respected martial arts instructors in North America, and the late professor wrote what was at one time the best selling college textbook of all time. Oh well, I guess the price of a typewriter is more interesting.

From the previous story that ran in May (link is available in this story): His bombing targets also included the late U-M Professor James McConnell, who was injured when his colleague, Nicklaus Suino, opened the package bomb on Nov. 15, 1985.

they did not catch the uni-bomber in the real un-ibombers manifesto he stated that if the government tried to pin his actions on a patsy he would take down another plane right after Kaczynski was framed another plane went down.
