U-M plans memorial tribute to Patrick Fleming, marching band trumpeter killed in US-23 crash

By Paula Gardner

The University of Michigan Marching Band will take the field on Saturday without one of its trumpeters, Patrick Fleming, who died Monday following a car crash on US-23 near Fenton.

The band will leave a place in its formation for Fleming, David Brandon, U-M's athletic director, wrote in a recent blog post.

When they are in any of their formations, the band will leave an unoccupied space in the trumpet section where Patrick is supposed to be standing," Brandon wrote. "Patrick Fleming will be missed by us all. The Michigan Marching Band was an important part of Patrick's life, and he was an important part of what makes our band special."

Fleming was a Pioneer High School graduate who set a goal to play in the U-M marching band - one that he realized after enrolling at U-M's Flint campus.

Fleming, who lived in Ypsilanti, drove 112 miles daily to attend classes and also make the daily band practices. He also worked full-time.

Funeral services for Fleming are being arranged by the C&H Community Home for Funerals in Ypsilanti.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3, at the funeral home, located at 411 S. Adams St.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, at New Hope Baptist Church in Ann Arbor.

If one wonders what a "Michigan Man" is, go no further than Patrick! As important to Michigan as any All American, any Astronaut, any President,.......

I sat next to Patrick in band for three years at Ann Arbor Pioneer. He was truly a great guy to know and be with. He'll truly be missed. I'm not sure if a black, male, trumpet-playing angel is a politically correct image, but God has one of them now. Trumept pals forever, Patrick.
