U-M Board of Regents to vote on $6.2 million North Campus Support Facility project Thursday

By Kyle Feldscher

The University of Michigan Board of Regents will vote on a $6.2 million project proposing a data and support center on North Campus at its regular meeting on Thursday.

The proposed 700-square-foot North Campus Support Facility will consist of a modular data center providing space with benches for set-up and repair of equipment near the U-M Transportation Research Institute, according to U-M executive vice president and chief financial officer Timothy Slottow.

The proposed center will also have “the necessary mechanical, electrical and data infrastructure” to support research computing and data storage, Slottow wrote in a message to regents.

Parking in the area will not be affected, Slottow said. The Transportation Research Institute is located at 2901 Baxter Road near the intersection with Huron Parkway. Construction is expected to be complete by the spring of 2012.

The funding for the project will come from investment proceeds provided all or in part by the university’s commercial paper program, secured by a pledge of General Revenues and authorized by the Board of Regents.

The total cost of the project, including the equipment inside the building, is $6.2 million. That price is not solely for the construction of the building by itself. I'm sorry for the confusion.

Is this correct? This is almost $9,000 per square foot!

No, it's not correct. Look at the letter, it says the workshop / setup space attached to the data center is 700 sf. It doesn't say how big the overall facility is. That would have required reporting.

A grammatical error has been corrected. Thank you to the reader who pointed it out.

700 square feet? I think you may have missed a second error.
