U-M basketball recruit Austin Hatch will be brought out of coma on Monday
Austin Hatch, whose father and stepmother died after their small plane crashed near Charlevoix, will be brought out of his drug-induced coma on Monday, the Detroit News is reporting.

Hatch has been in Munson Medical Center in Traverse City since shortly after the crash on Friday.
The junior from Fort Wayne, Ind., is part of U-M's 2013 recruiting class.
The coma was induced to keep swelling down and prevent brain injury, according to the Detroit Free Press.
The plane crash was the second to drastically affect the Hatch family: His mother and two siblings were killed in a 2003 crash of a small plane also piloted by his father, Stephen Hatch, according to the Fort Wayne (Ind.) Journal Gazette.

My understanding is that Austin has at least a chance to fully recover from this, due in part to his youth and fitness, combined with the nature of his injuries. I truly hope that ends up occurring, as he has suffered far too much already, in my opinion. Our family's thoughts are with the rest of his extended family at this point.

I knew the pilot and his first wife when we were younger. They were very good people, so please refrain from any negative comments. Whereas, I understand the skepticism surrounding the cause of the accidents, the mere fact that accidents do happen (sometimes twice) should be focused on at this time. My prayers go out to the family and to Austin for his survival and recovery.

KeepingItReal ... Last night (shortly before I posted my comment), someone else posted a comment which indicated negativity/blame toward Steve (the father/pilot). A2.com staff must have subsequently removed the comment. Thanks and have a good day.

This is a sad situation. Even if he does improve from critical condition, he can likely expect a very intense and lenghty rehabilitation period. And two members of his immediately family passed away in the accident.

His father and stepmom died in this accident. His mother and two siblings died in the 2003 accident. His three step-siblings and his grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins are all he has now. Just a heart-breaking situation for a teenager to have to face....
