Traffic detour on West Stadium Boulevard starts Tuesday

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Starting tomorrow, West Stadium Boulevard in Ann Arbor between Pauline Boulevard and Seventh Street will be reduced to one lane westbound.

The lane closure, needed for road reconstruction and utility improvements, will last until November, the city said.

According to the city's Project Management Unit, eastbound traffic will be detoured west on Pauline to south on Maple Road to east on Scio Church Road to north on Main Street, back to West Stadium Boulevard.

Pedestrian access will be maintained on both sides of the street until the sidewalk ramps are removed in preparation for replacement, the city said. That work is expected to take place in April and will last about two to three weeks.

The city said drivers can expect delays and should seek alternate routes.

Will this mean that you no longer have to be a bus to make a left turn off Stadium to Seventh?

Gardenberry, I'm glad of it. People drive way too fast through there. I usually keep up with traffic if it's flowing above the speed limit and it doesn't seem unreasonably fast, but not at the 45+ I see people doing regularly.

If any of you complainers had attended the neighborhood meetings with the road planners you would have understood the decisions to stripe the road into one lane in each direction with a left turn lane. This is a residential portion of the road and the desire is to slow traffic. This is not just a resurfacing but is dealing with water mains and sewers--a complete make over.

Thanks for the great picture! But it reminds me that not all of the changes that have come to Stadium Blvd. have been 'improvements'. As a wise softball coach used to say, "You could always cash your check at Stadium (Tice's) Tavern, but you can't buy a beer at the Bank!"

They're not just resurfacing. They're digging out all of the base, replacing drains, putting in all new sub-base, etc, just like they just did to the commercial stretches of Stadium. That always take months. Look at the two year project on Huron River Drive for comparison. Most people don't have a clue how much work goes into the stuff underground, and there's no reason they need to other than to know that this stuff takes time. This isn't a country two-lane where they lay down two layers of asphalt and call it good (although this project fixes some of the stuff done 80 years ago when this was a country two-lane).

Localguy, I understand that's exactly what they plan to do. Apparently someone decided that the mess they made out of S. Main near Busch's worked so well that they'd like to make the same mistake again. And again and again.

What genius figured out this detour? Pauline east to S. Seventh is much shorter.

Localguy - wouldn't surprise me int he least. The morons have already reduced Platt and Packard to one lane, so why not screw things up even more? The way the city council acts, one would think they are actively trying to destroy the city. In terms of why the project takes so long, I have one word: unions. The unions, and other such corrupt organizations, have a vested interest in extending the duration of the project. For as long as we are help hostage to the dictates of the unions, this will never change.

While it seems like a long time, there has been a rash of water main breaks in the area near S. Seventh. Hopefully they are going to replace water mains as well as resurfacing/reconfiguring the roadway. That would explain it taking so long. If they don't fix the water mains then they'll soon be digging this all up again anyway and putting big lumpy patches on your nice smooth new road. Now, there's your inefficiency.

Yes it is a very long time. At least nine long months long. I live right in the middle of it, but it needs to be done.My question is the end plan. I heard that Stadium will be one lane in each direction, with a left turn lane and two bike lanes. I hope this is not true. Talk about back ups!! I'm sure this would be our Mayor's idea of bike lanes everywhere that 1/10th. of 1% of Ann Arbor would use. Just one more bad idea coming from our leadership.

How can it POSSIBLY take 8 months to do this?? Agree with Hunterjim. Must be lack of full commitment and attention to the project.

Why such a long period of time to do this work? Sounds very inefficient to me.
