Traffic crash closes eastbound M-14

By Bob Needham

Eastbound M-14 was closed near the Barton Drive exit for over an hour this afternoon due to a two-vehicle auto crash.

Two vehicles collided on eastbound M-14 between Barton Drive and the west "triple decker" interchange with US-23 around 12:15 p.m., Ann Arbor Township Fire Department Lt. Ed Mantay said. No injuries were reported.

The freeway had to be closed due to debris all across the road surface and the two disabled vehicles, Mantay said. At around 1:30 p.m. the freeway was still closed but was expected to reopen at any time.

Michigan State Police is handling the investigation, but MSP officials could not be reached; further details, including the cause of the crash, were not available.

Update: By midafternoon, the Google Traffic map for Ann Arbor showed traffic flowing freely through the area.

Wow, I'm glad I made it through before the road was shut down. I saw several folks walking around I hope nobody was seriously injured.

As I've paid more attention to AnnArbor.com, I've noticed more and more of these accidents at the same spots. Merge tips for mergers: Use your signals. Try to approximate the speed of traffic when merging. Look (and signal) before you merge. Merge tips for drivers already on the freeway: Don't be d-bags, and let people in. Don't cruise in the merge lane, then get all hot and bothered when people actually want to merge. Don't be that guy who makes it hard for others to merge. Tip - they're not "cutting you off". They're merging.

Lives were saved by the higher speed limits. Yes it's counter-intuitive but speed saves lives.

Also in news, people crossing median to join westbound M14 traffic to avoid said traffic almost create another accident. Thank you black Kia for turning out in front of a car and two semis and maintaining 25 mph. It was awesome to slam on our brakes and go off the road!!! Karma, please kick in anytime now.

We were going 65 and slowing because we saw the back up on the other side of the road. Any which way it doesn't matter how fast I was going, the Kia drove across the grass median (illegal) and turned into traffic with no regard that both lanes were taken up. A.) shouldn't have crossed the median, ILLEGAL B.) if you're going to cross the median, don't pull out in front of other cars, especially semis. They had ample visibility to see the oncoming traffic that shouldn't have to slow down for someone breaking the law just so they can avoid traffic.

Kristen Any chance you and 2 semi's were trying to maintain 75 mph?
