By Cindy Heflin

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for the Ann Arbor area and all of southeast Michigan effective until 6 p.m. Thursday.

The National Weather Service warns storms bringing large amounts of rain, wind, hail and even tornadoes are possible in the Ann Arbor area Thursday.

Forecasters said several tornadoes are possible. Storms could cause damaging wind gusts up to 80 mph and hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter.

A tornado watch means conditions are right for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms to form. It does not mean that tornadoes have been sighted or will definitely occur.

The weather service advises people in the watch area to be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible warnings.

The weather service has also issued a flood watch for the Ann Arbor area and said rainfall of 1 to 3 inches is possible by Friday morning.
