Suspected drug dealer sent to hospital after swallowing substance during arrest

By AnnArbor.com Freelance Journalist

Charges are pending against a 37 year-old male who was sent to a local hospital for treatment Saturday after he swallowed suspected narcotics while being detained by Ypsilanti police.

The incident took place around 9 p.m. around Washington Street and Michigan Avenue in downtown Ypsilanti.

Officers responded to a report of a man selling drugs in an alleyway and detained a suspect who matched the description. The man then swallowed the suspected narcotics.

Police arrested the man for resisting and obstructing arrest.

Should have called an ambulance - after a few hours.

If it was pot, he'd be asleep.

In Saudi Arabia? They would have done something else. In this society? The bleeding heart liberals would have a field day if we did not give him his due process. I agree with your sentiment and wish other wise. O well.

Recycling is useful to law enforcement as well.

I hope he has a good health insurance plan from his employer or we'll end up paying for a drug dealer's visit to the ER.

I wonder if Obama Care would have kicked in on this one.

Good to know that we have a boogie man to be scared of in the coming firestorm in 2014.

In less than the next generation, this would be a moot point because the ACA will be in full effect. And possible legislation would make the perp financially responsible, BUT by then he would already be in the insurance pool, so the docs and staff get paid without a loss.

Since his income is probably unreported, he would receive the maximum benefits available without any responsibility for payment. Most people are completely unaware what will happen to their bills when we hit the firestorm of 2014. It's a shame doctors are honor-bound to treat this kind of self-abuse, though. Obviously, it's a good thing doctors don't make morality judgments, but I do think this person should be responsible for every penny of what the taxpayers will otherwise have to foot from his stupid and illegal behavior.

Under the ACA, he'd either have his own private insurance, be required to buy private insurance or pay the tax penalty to the IRS. Simple.
