Stolen puppy returned to the Humane Society of Huron Valley

By Erica Hobbs

Chilly, a 9-week-old American bulldog puppy, has returned to the Humane Society of Huron Valley after being stolen from the Superior Township facility Dec. 18.

A Humane Society cruelty investigator retrieved the puppy from a home in Ann Arbor late last night, Marketing Director Deb Kern said.

Chilly, a 9-week-old American bulldog puppy, has returned safely to her home at the Humane Society of Huron Valley after being stolen last week.

“She is back, she’s no worse for the wear, and she’s doing great,” Kern said. “We’re very happy to have her back.”

Chilly is deaf and was being treated for an infection before her disappearance.

The Humane Society acted on an anonymous tip from a caller who had read about the missing dog on AnnArbor.com. Kern said the caller refused the $500 reward.

The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the abduction, and officials there did not return calls seeking comment. The Humane Society said it could not release any further details on the crime.

In the meantime, Kern said Chilly is being well taken care of and should be eligible for adoption within the next two weeks, after she finishes her medical treatment and is spayed.

“We’re going to keep a good eye on her and take good care of her, just like we do with all the animals here,” she said.

This story will be updated when additional details are available.

And a Merry Xmas to you too, Rizzle Scrooge. No one said anything about releasing criminals. And since when are crimes like... "Burglaries, robberies, fraud, grand theft, drug dealers" non-violent? Stealing a helpless, deaf puppy who needs medication and special care is to most people a violent crime, especially since one does not know what the creep's plan for the puppy was to be. How cold!

I'm glad the pup is back and safe....and I pray that the person who called is in fact the person who stole the puppy originally. It would be the best ending to this story to think that this person had a change of heart. Rather than wanting to see the thief prosecuted, I'd like to hope he is sorry and never commits another crime. Now that would be a real Christmas story.

it's funny how everyone wants the puppy thief to be severely punished but the same people are willing to let dozens of non-violent offenders be released in Washtenaw County every month after serving a very small fraction of their sentence due to overcrowding in our jails and prisons. Burglaries, robberies, fraud, grand theft, drug dealers, and many other far worse criminals are NOT being punished severely, so why should the puppy thief? Oh... it's cute and deaf?.... OK my bad. Life sentence!

Could you please post information about adoption procedures at the Humane Society?

Let's hope the creep who stole her is punished... severely. And Slick, your thinly veiled sarcasm is not appreciated, most of the animals stolen are used in dogfighting rings, how funny is that?

My admiration goes to the person who tipped the Humane Society as to the location of the puppy. And this person is so honorable that s/he refused the reward. A wonderful person doing the right thing, simply because it was the right thing to do for the puppy. I'm proud of you, whoever you are.

I know everyone following this story wants to think ill of the person(s) who took the puppy, but maybe that's also the person who did the tipping off.

Yea!!! This is the best holiday gift! Kudos to the person who tipped off the Humane Society and double kudos for declining the award, I am sure it will go back to helping the large homeless animal population. Great job Humane Society and investigators-keep up the good work! Now to those in the criminal system could we PLEASE see adequate punishment for the person or persons involved? Thank you!

Oh, I'm so happy! I was just asking someone at HSHV yesterday if there'd been any word on Chilly, so I'm thrilled that she's back safely! She's just too cute... :)
