South Main Street closed between Scio Church and Stadium after gas line hit

By Kyle Feldscher

This story was updated to show the intersection of South Main Street and Stadium Boulevard was reopened just before 1 p.m.

Ann Arbor police and fire personnel closed South Main Street between Scio Church Road and Stadium Boulevard after a gas line was hit, officials said.

The intersection of South Main and Stadium reopened as of 12:53 p.m. Wednesday with lane restrictions in place, according to University of Michigan police.

DTE Energy spokeswoman Erica Donerson said a third party hit a gas line and DTE crews are on scene. She said police and fire decided to close the road as a precaution while DTE evaluated the situation.

Donerson said at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday crews were working to determine what repairs need to be done. It’s unknown how long the road will be closed.

No evacuations have been done in the area, Donerson said.

Ann Arbor police confirmed they were on scene for a suspected gas leak in support of fire crews.

University of Michigan police tweeted the area was closed and could remain that way until late afternoon.

My wife was in that area yesterday. Could she have hit the gas line? She is a terrible driver.

Or is it you who is the terrible driver and you are just kind of tweaking that one?

Hi Kyle, Are motorists still able to travel Eastbound Stadium towards State without being detoured?

Ron and Skyjockey - The update from UMPD came at about 12:53 p.m. I haven't personally driven over to the area yet today, so maybe their update jumped the gun. However, their update fit with what AAPD told me as well, so that's what I went with.

@skyjockey43 did you post this before or after Kyle updated the article? His update seems to indicate that maybe after you left it reopened. Maybe Kyle can clarify too.

I was just over there. Traffic in all directions at the intersection of main and stadium is blocked as of 1:00pm

Ron, I'm trying to find out - police are gone from the scene and the fire department is hard to get in touch with when they're not in the station.

Dry run for the Main Street closings during game day... only they got the wrong block.

That's almost what I thought was going on when I ran into it at 11am. I surely pity the folks in that neighborhood come game days. Yikes, it was not pretty and it wasn't even *close* to the number of people we'll see during a game.

Figured something was up when our neighborhood side street (Potter) began to resemble I-94 during rush hour with many vehicles speeding and blowing through the stop sign at Belmar. Probably unrealistic to expect the police to dispatch a cruiser to calm things down. But I shouldn't complain lest some commentator remind me that if I don't like it I should move.

I'm normally one of those commentators, but I'll give you a pass this time. Hopefully you'll get your squad car.
