Snyder is a 'strange guy,' Mitt Romney says on fundraiser video

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder has endorsed GOP nominee Mitt Romney in his presidential bid and the two have appeared together, but Romney describes Snyder as strange on the now-infamous fundraising video that surfaced this week, MLive reports.

"The governor of Michigan is a strange guy," Romney can be heard saying. "...One tough nerd. He's an IT guy ... In fact, he never wears a tie, like you."

A Snyder spokesman told the Detroit Free Press the remarks were not troubling to the governor.

The video, recorded secretly, was thrust into the spotlight, when Mother Jones wrote an article about it and posted it on YouTube.

Background noise obscures much of the conversation, but you can watch it below.

This is par for the course with everything the clueless Republicans have been doing. They made a big deal about how they were pulling up stakes and not spending more ad money here. They've sent me absentee ballot applications in the mail in the past by this time. Not now. Michigan was winnable but they seem to intend on losing it. Why?

Because the people running the GOP campaign got a quick glimpse of a clue once, but they cannot, for the life of them, remember anything about it. And they were never close enough to get it.

JT: I think it's because there are too many 47-percenters in this state to make it worth bothering with. Better to spend the money where there are more 1-percenters or such.

I know plenty of people who pay no federal income tax on an annual income tax return but who despite their lack of income understand the basic economics of money and understand that all of the government borrowing and spending results in a substantial loss of value to the money that they have, in the form of the hidden tax of inflation, higher prices and devaluation of currency. They also understand that the more government programs that are out there, the more regulation and greater drag on the private sector as everyone's money and activities become more and more regulated, causing a reduction in the velocity of the private sector activity. Both Snyder and Romney are individuals who posses abilities of analysis and management that 99% of use can only wish that we had. Rather than being grateful that we have some in such a position to restructure our bureaucracies that are bankrupting public and private organizations and persons in the private market, we want to complain about them not being "cool" enough like the "cool kids," we re-elected like Granholm, Kilpatrick and Clinton. I will grant you that Clinton is in the top 1% of analytical minds. But he did not combine that with top management skills and had personal issues perhaps worse than 99% of us. That is part of the vitriol we see against Snyder and Romney - people are just plain jealous, because these guys are happy having lived up to both to the expectations of other and their own expectations. Most of us have not lived up to either and will appease the resentment we have against our-selves by knocking the achievement of the fellow who does not resent himself. We keep this up and we are going to have the collective psychology of a country like....Pakistan. Chase Ingersoll

Two questions, C.I.: 1) How would you rank the analytical mind of the previous Republican President (Dubya Bush, in case you can't remember him)? (If any.) 2) Do you include in your concept of government programs that form a drag on the economy the incredibly expensive military-industrial complex and all the wars that Republicans seem intent on getting us involved in? I have experienced the G. W. Bush administration, and I have watched as we got enmeshed in Iraq and Afghanistan, and I have listened to Republicans, in particular, crying out for more wars around the world, so that we can remain a strong leader of the free world (so to speak), and I keep wondering if there's some reason, economically speaking, that these trillions and trillions of dollars, and the debt resulting from them, do not have a similar effect on our country as other government programs.

"I know plenty of people who pay no federal income tax on an annual income tax return but ... understand the basic economics of money and understand that all of the government borrowing and spending results in a substantial loss of value to the money that they have..." But you also seem to know no one who understands that, without regulation, the economy will be wrecked again and again so long as there's no policing. Your assessment of the public's desire for more and more "assistance" from govt. can't be faulted but you implicitly call for the same extremist solutions as the rest of the Conservative Fanboys. In other words, you support and defend the SAME deregulation that was promoted and installed by Bush / Greenspan, et all. That's the "policy" (aka, ideologue belief) which wrecked our economy in the first place - and led to this over-large federal debt. Just FYI, if not for the social economic aid programs of FDR, a few million people would have gone from poverty to starvation and homelessness, and then on to DEATH. But today, arrogant false prophets we know as "conservatives" target those very same public aid programs which have remained because THEY WORK. And you purposely single out the "jealous" opponents to make it seem they are the entire anti-Republican camp: when in fact independents and the truly educated hate them because they practice deceit and ideological thinking on a grand scale. Besides: your comment is off topic and therefore, by definition, is the work of a political fanboy / troll working on behalf of "conservative beliefs". Example: you point to Granholm, Kilpatrick and Clinton as having been elected by supposedly deluded voters - but entirely miss that YOUR candidate, G.W. Bush also got re-elected even though it was obvious he was an incompetent and a fool of the first order. You're "just a little" skewed in your thinking and your statements.

Strange. Has Snyder ever tied the family dog to the roof of a car? Has he ever allegedly forcibly shaved the head of a gay high school classmate? Sometimes I can't tell what passes for normal.

This is what is so aweful about people like you being given a public forum. 1. The dog was in a dog carrier that was attached to the roof of the car as many families did, before SUV's were the norm. 2. There was never an allegation that the incident involved shaving anyone's head and any allegation that anyone's hair was even cut and Romney's involvement was thoroughly called into question. You are probably one who attributes the statement "I can see Russia from my house" to Sarah Palin rather than the comedian on SNL. But there is no "probably" concerning your being horribly ill informed and being a person that appears happy to use a public forum to slander someone you don't like. I didn't vote for Romney, but I at least ask that if you are going to slander someone at least don't insult the intelligence of people that unlike you, go to the effort of reading more than one media source.

Obama is planning on unilaterally eliminating most of America's nuclear weapons. In the opinion of many analysts that could only invite a first strike if we ever have another Cuban Missile Crisis like event with China or Russia.

Right on Mike! Too bad liberals are too hypocritical to be able to admit when their own precious savior Hussein screws up, but then they'd might be forced to see just what a mistake they made by electing such a hater of America and our Constitution. So sad when people deliberately ignore the facts and turn a blind eye to reality while our liberties and freedoms are being destroyed more and more each day by a control freak who thinks it's his god given right to play Robin Hood.
