Snow, cold and clouds to roll into Ann Arbor region this week
It looks like February will go out like a lion, with snow forecast for this week followed by several days of below-freezing temperatures. The National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch for Tuesday.
Heavy, wet snow is in the forecast beginning Tuesday night and tapering off into flurries Thursday. The winter storm watch, which covers Tuesday afternoon through the evening, said snowfall could exceed an inch an hour at times and produce poor visibility for travelers.
"This is going to be the same system which is going to bring blizzard conditions to the southern plains tomorrow," Brian Edwards, meteorologist with AccuWeather in State College, Pa., said Sunday.
Around Ann Arbor, snow will develop Tuesday afternoon and continue through the night to Wednesday afternoon, Edwards said. Lighter snow flurries could continue as late as Friday, he said, as daytime highs stay below freezing.
"The heaviest of it appears like it falls Tuesday night into Wednesday morning," Edwards said. "Right now we were thinking 3 to 6 inches is your best bet for accumulation."
Leftover snow showers are also possible Saturday, he said.
Partly cloudy conditions Monday could also be the last chance to soak up some rare sunlight for a while, as clouds settle in for most of the rest of the week and into next weekend, Edwards said.

I do, Kyle and oldtimer3. Everything was shut down. No school, almost all businesses were closed. My father was unable to go work. He and the neighboors were shoveling out the street. I also recall snow drifts 3 to 4 ft high. We all survived and spring eventually came. The thing with that storm was the high drifting.

Enough of the snow I say. I'm ready for spring. On the positive side, I saw the first two red-winged blackbirds of the year at the bird feeders today. Also, a couple cardinals were singing this a.m. So, there's hope.

The Weather Channel has not changed its storm forecast. Since the storm is not deflecting from yesterday's predicted path, we'll probably get at least some snow flurries.

Can't wait for spring. Only trouble there is you get six good weeks, tops. Then the other type of obnoxious terrible weather comes for four months. Then relief with fall, only to have six weeks later this garbage all over again.

Well I hope the superintendent of the ann arbor public schools gets her act together..I hope she doesn't put thousands of students at risk with bad conditions. And I certainly hope she doesn't make the call from Pennsylvania or Maryland, wherever she actually lives.

I looked it up. I found nice things said about her. She had a well-performing district and she received honors for various programs instituted. The School Board applauded her work with the N. Allegheny School District upon her resignation and nothing but praise for her as being a hard worker. Ann Arbor also did pretty well in the MEAPs. I don't have a dog in this race and don't know about how many days she works, but in today's day and age, it's not rare for interstate commutes and, it's very trying. However, she's in a position where she's not measured by the hours she works but by the results of what she does. My guess is that she does a lot of work when she's not at her office as well as when she's there. Just an opinion. Measure her by her results. If those are lacking, then bring that to the forefront.

Not to worry. They closed the schools and evening programs a couple of Mondays back when the temp was 40 and raining in the morning. Something about gravel roads in the City of Ann Arbor being frozen over... I'm sure they are poised and ready to close all the schools at the first sign that a gravel road in the city might possibly become impassable. But, then again, it is Ann Arbor...or Maryland... or, wherever...

It is winter and we do live in Michigan, but as spring approaches I hope we take severe storm watches and warnings seriously. I like to hear what "might happen" in regards to snowy/rainy weather so I can plan accordingly. Better to have over planned especially if you have children.

When the birds come back, so do the insects, good ones and pests. Spring and summer are tornado season for northern states. I'd like to see a March with drier air than last year's, too dry for thunderstorms, let alone tornadoes.

You mean the old joke? Using it regarding snow instead of rain? "I hope the snow keeps up," says one person. "Why?" asks a second person. "So it won't come down," replies the first.

Before the grocery stores and gas stations get jammed....the National Weather Service says this: "THERE IS STILL SOME UNCERTAINTY AS TO THE OVERALL TRACK OF THIS STORM SYSTEM AND THE LOCATIONS WHICH WILL RECEIVE THE MORE PROLONGED PERIOD OF HEAVY SNOW. THERE IS ALSO SOME CONCERN THAT TEMPERATURES SOUTH OF THE INTERSTATE 96 CORRIDOR MAY WARM ENOUGH TO CHANGE THE SNOW OVER TO RAIN AND THUS DRAMATICALLY CUT DOWN ON ACCUMULATIONS."

I recently passed by the abandoned-but-standing house on Pinecrest. Unlike the recent report about its tarp, I thought it was holding back the snow just fine. 4-6 inches of snow might be enough to cause the tarp to fall in, if it isn't enough for the roof to fall in. Snow doesn't run off roofs like rain does.

There could be enough warm air wrapping into the system for rain to mix in so we could come in at the low end of the 3 to 6 inch range.

AAFish, I don't think anyone is ignoring the importance of weather. If we aren't prepared for a snowstorm by the end of February, we never will be! However, I think there's a difference between preparation and panic. I'm guessing most of us have our favorite weather sites and apps and monitor them. The media does a great job of announcing the possibility of an upcoming storm. Whether we react with caution or panic is a personal choice. Ask any grocery checkout worker. :-)

@ AAFish, My term weather head is for the local TV weather people who get carried away with normal snow falls. People who live in real snow counties such as in the northern lower and UP laugh at us down here and especially the TV weather people. The beginning of your reply was contradictory by saying what I originally said and then you preceding to say it will be 35-39! Ya , I follow the weather a lot also and tend to see how the weather patterns flow. Lighten up dude! You're taking this weather stuff a little too seriously Oh! BTW Jerry Hodak of WXYZ TV once said we don't what's going to happen! It's all a big guessing game for us.

@mr54 -- I see no forecasts of temps remaining between 35 and 40, from any of the forecasting services. Forecast highs Tuesday range from 35 to 39, but just about all are calling for an overnight low Tuesday into Wednesday of around 30, which is prime for possibly heavy snow; the air is warm enough to hold plenty of moisture. And, I follow weather a lot -- even know a bit about it myself -- and never see the "weather heads" in "typical panic and doom and gloom mode." They are scientists -- you know, people who deal in facts, data, and logic -- and merely report to us what they think is likely to happen, which is their job. If they were NOT to do so, and we had a major weather event, I'd guess that you would be one of the first to howl and scream about "Why didn't they say something?"

With temps between 35 and 40 don't expect much snow. The weather heads are in typical panic and doom and gloom mode.
