Ann Arbor police release sketch of man sought in indecent exposure case

By Lee Higgins

Ann Arbor police detectives released a sketch of a man who they say parked in front of a Dundee Drive home on July 14 and exposed himself to a teenage girl.

The man, who police say might be involved in other incidents in western Washtenaw County, is described as white, in his 40s, and has brown hair.

Police are working to identify this man, but say he looks older than the sketch.

He has a receding hairline and "beer belly," according to a wanted poster.

Investigators say he parked in front of the home at 12:45 a.m., made eye contact with a teenage girl who was working on a computer near a window and began to masturbate.

An interior light was on in his van during the incident, police said. According to the poster, the older model minivan is tan or light in color with a molding strip down the side that is possibly black. It has a square rear end, the poster says.

Detectives are investigating whether the incident is linked to a similar case two hours earlier on Frederick Drive and several incidents earlier this year in Dexter and Scio Township.

Anyone with information can call the department's tip line at (734) 794-6939.

OK I can see you're just arguing for the sake of arguing. The world isn't flat, a home can be higher than the road it is on. It's actually quite common. And your question is asking if indecent exposure is actually a crime? Yeah...it's pretty cut and dry.

Creepy and disturbing, but is it really criminal? I seem to remember reading about a court case where a guy was masturbating in his own house, in front of a window where people could see him from the sidewalk. He was eventually acquitted, I suppose because you can pretty much do whatever you want in your house. Perhaps not your car, though. I don't know what the legal theory is behind such things.

If the window was higher than the van and the passenger side was closest to the structure, there could be a clear view into the driver's seat area. Usually these punks pick their victims because of the positioning. He'll get caught, they always do.

Unless he opened the door or the teenager has X-ray vision, nobody could see what he was doing. Vans don't come with windows that go all the way down to the ground, do they? When was the last time you ever saw someone below the waist as they sat in their car? Ever? Didn't think so. You might be able to make a pretty good guess about what he's doing, but that's not the same thing at all as being able to see him doing it.

@ Dave Before drawing to many conclusions you might want to take a look at the hyperlinked text above to the original story... "A man drove up in front of a Dundee Drive house this morning, made eye contact with a teenage girl inside and masturbated while an interior light was on in his van, Ann Arbor police said."

If he was parked in a van, how could anyone see what he was doing? You'd have to walk up to the window and look in. Unless they're making vans with glass doors these days, but I haven't seen any. Unless the girl was standing next to the car and looking in, she has no idea what he was doing.

This crime took place on Dundee Ave. Why doesn't it show up on Ann Arbor Crime Statistics for July 11 through 17th?
