More than 725 Saline fourth and fifth graders spent time shooting hoops for a good cause during a basketball unit of their physical education last month.
Today, the top fundraisers were given the chance to “slime” their teachers during a special assembly at Heritage School that celebrated their efforts.
Teachers Mike Price and Chris DeFant, who worked together on the program, said they hoped it would become an annual event.
Students learned about heart issues and good heart health before raising more than $10,000 for the American Heart Society’s Hoops for Heart. The sliming was held as a reward for surpassing their goal.
“Hoops for Heart promotes the value of healthy habits to middle school children and empowers them to contribute to their community’s welfare,” according to information about the program.

Good project for a worthy cause, but perhaps the "reward" could be something a bit more dignified. Pouring some kind of slop over a teacher's head only continues the downhill slide in societal values. Perhaps something more respectful as a reward could be used. This reinforces that "trashing" someone with a gooey liquid is ok. It's not.

I would like to add one more thing. That was a great picture that was used for the article. Those that know the school and the students know why I think this is as good a picture as anyone could ask for in the paper.

I was at the school working today and got to see all of this occur. It was great fun for the students as a reward for a job well done in making the school the #2 ranked earners in terms of donations through the Hoops for Heart program. I do have a large editorial correction that needs to be made however and I feel it is a blatent error that should never ever happen. Hoops for Heart is not put on by the American Cancer Society. It is an American HEART Association program.
