Planners give developer more time for Banks of Saline condominium project

By Lisa Allmendinger

The developer of the Banks of Saline, a planned 102-condominium and office complex on Monroe Street, has been granted more time to get the project under way.

Saline River Properties LLC got a one-year extension for its site plan Wednesday night from the Saline Planning Commission.

In a letter, the company said it cannot begin work until Johnson Controls, the last owner of the site, cleans up contaminated soil.

The company filed a lawsuit against Johnson Controls to enforce a consent judgment that was signed in 2004 to clean up contamination on the property.

A court date is expected in August or September, according to a letter from Tom Foley of Saline River Properties.

Originally on the 12-acre site was the Universal Die Casting plant, which contained a creamery building constructed in 1911. Universal Die Casting closed its doors in 1988 and the building had been boarded up for many years before it was demolished to make way for the new development.

The Saline Planning Commission approved the final site plan for the Banks of Saline in September 2006, and this is the fourth extension that the project has been granted.

In other business at the Planning Commission meeting, Scott Lemm was elected chairman and Glenn Law was named vice chairman. Bill Beardsley was chosen as the board’s secretary-treasurer.

Absent from the meeting were Richard Nehring and Walt Byers.
