Saline woman charged with falsely claiming her vehicle was stolen

By Art Aisner

Saline police say a 43-year-old city resident filed a false police report claiming her vehicle was stolen in an attempt to cover up her involvement in a hit-and-run crash.

Michelle Dollar, 43, was charged with one felony count of filing a false police report for saying her vehicle was stolen from her driveway on May 4, court records show. The charge is punishable by up to four years in prison.

The missing 2007 Ford Explorer was impounded by Washtenaw County sheriff’s deputies investigating a hit-and-run property damage crash that occurred that same day.

Police reports indicate deputies found the unoccupied vehicle parked near the scene of a reported crash in the Dexter area. About an hour later, Dollar called police to report her vehicle was taken while she was napping in her home. She claimed she left her keys in the SUV as she went inside due to a severe headache, and the vehicle was gone when she awoke, reports said.

Upon learning of the related reports, an officer and deputy coordinated their investigations, and Dollar admitted the vehicle was never stolen during an interview at her home, reports said. She told them she accidentally sideswiped a parked car, left her vehicle at a business nearby and called her roommate for a ride home. Alcohol may have been a factor in the incident, according to reports.

A warrant authorizing the charges was signed last week, and court dates are pending.
