Report: New U-M children's and women's hospitals among top 10 healthcare projects in the world

The audit, tax and advisory firm KPMG has released its Infrastructure 100: World Cities Edition report, which includes 14 projects in the U.S.
The report focuses on infrastructure innovations that make cities places that people want to live and do business.
The C.S. Mott and Von Voigtlander hospitals were listed among the top 10 most innovative healthcare projects in the world.
The 1.1 million square-foot hospitals in the U-M Health System opened in December 2011.
The hospitals, which include 348 beds in a 12-story inpatient wing and a nine-story outpatient wing, garnered LEED Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council in April 2012.
In Michigan, the Detroit Works Project in Detroit is the only other project to be ranked globally as a leader in infrastructure by the KPMG report.
In the U.S., KPMG also ranked the following projects in ots top 100 list:

- Chicago: Rush University Medical Center Transformation Project
- Honolulu, Hawaii: Kokua Wireless
- Los Angeles to San Francisco High-Speed Rail
- Miami, Fla.: Port of Miami Tunnel
- Monterey Peninsula, Calif.: People's Moss Desalination
- New York, N.Y.: World Trade Center Redevelopment
- New York, N.Y.: +Pool
- New York, N.Y.: East Side Access
- Tennessee: Cisco HealthPresence
- Tysons Corner, Va.,: Tysons Corner
- Yonkers, N.Y.: Yonkers Schools PPP

So far we love the new hospital. Its design is so much better than the old hospital. We are preparing to have a new baby there in the next few weeks.

This is pretty cool news. I see that building each day, and I was worried that it would be an eyesore -- it is not. It's an incredibly beautiful building for the Ann Arbor skyline, and at sunrise/sunset the sun shines off of it quite nicely. I was looking at the list of 100 and it's a pretty neat list of structures around the world. So, UM is ranked for having among the top 100 most innovative innovative infrastructure projects around the globe, but to listen to local protagonists, all UM does is waste money, take property off the tax roles, etc. etc. They fail to see the billion dollar enterprise that has world wide renown and brings Ann Arbor great recognition and pride, economic value flowing the economy, and an unparalleled educational institution that is the envy of much of the world. Such simple minded, short-term thinking is foolish in the extreme. "The new C.S.
