Power outage affecting several hundred Ann Arbor-area DTE Energy customers

By Cindy Heflin

Power is out for several hundred DTE Energy customers in Washtenaw and southern Livingston counties, following storms that moved through the area overnight.

The power outage is affecting nearly 500 customers in an area just west of Pioneer High School on the city’s west side, according to the DTE Energy power outage map. The power went off about 2:45 a.m. and restoration is expected early this afternoon, said DTE spokesman John Austerberry.

Also, nearly 300 customers are without power near the area of Grove and South Harris roads in Ypsilanti Township, according to the map. Power has been off there since about 3:30 a.m. Restoration is expected between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. today.

Power is also out for about 350 customers near South Lyon. The area affected straddles southern Livingston County and southern Oakland County. Restoration is expected between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. today.

Outage areas are shown in green and purple. In the green areas, up to 500 customers are without power. Purple areas represent single-customer outages or those affecting fewer than 100 customers.

We live in the outage area and this is our *third* power outage in a month. And each time, the outage map shows the exact same area along Stadium Blvd. I filed a "frequent outage" report with DTE through their website, and was told last Wednesday (after the second power loss) that they all had various reasons: a circuit was tripped or something along those lines, a lightning strike, a tree leaning against a line, etc. That may all be true, but there's got to be more to it if is the same area *every* time. Every one of our neighbors that we spoken to about this agree that they've never lived somewhere they lost power as often as our neighborhood, but DTE told me it was a different issue every time. Suuuure...

All I can say is if this continues to happen in our neighborhood, DTE can expect legal action from residents. I'm not personally threatening, but I know alot of people are getting fed up with it. A generator would be great if I weren't living in an apartment.

kittylady, Not everyone can do what you suggest....the elderly for instance and those who live in apts etc.....your suggestion works for those who are able to get a generator, figure out how to use it, and haul it out again every time they need it. Instead is it possible that this utility furnish reliable electricity as utilities do in other states in the US ? Why should we accept poor service? SE MIchigan deserves better than a 3rd world utility service. DTE might be acceptable in Pakistan. In an except from http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/05/opinion/05kristof.html?ref=columnists "In fairness to Pakistan and Congo, wealthy people in such countries manage to live surprisingly comfortably. Instead of financing education with taxes, these feudal elites send their children to elite private schools. Instead of financing a reliable police force, they hire bodyguards. Instead of supporting a modern health care system for their nation, they fly to hospitals in London. You can tell the extreme cases by the hum of diesel generators at night. Instead of paying taxes for a reliable electrical grid, each wealthy family installs its own powerful generator to run the lights and air-conditioning. It's noisy and stinks, but at least you don't have to pay for the poor. " Is that DTE's goal for us?

A $500 portable gas generator puts you in control for the next 15-20 years. Proabbaly costs less thenthe food in your fridge. Just a thought for those who are capeable of thinking ahead and who want to be prepared for the inevitable.

We have not lost power once this summer. Tempting fate by saying so!

This marks the second outage for the area West of Stadium in the past few weeks. It would be one thing if affected customers were offered some form of credit, or even an apology, but instead DTE shows an complete disregard for those of us affected. And given that this has happened multiple times in the same area, and no surrounding areas have lost power, this is clearly a problem with DTE's service in this part of town. Furthermore, "early afternoon" is a questionable statement. As of 4 AM we were told power would be restored by 7:30 AM. Now at 9:30 AM my official DTE energy iPhone app suggests power will be back on between 3:30 and 5:30 PM. I wouldn't call that early afternoon.
