PETA objects to U-M President Mary Sue Coleman's social justice award
By David Jesse
About a dozen members of PETA showed up today to protest University of Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman getting a social justice award from a chapter of the Federal Bar Association, the Detroit Free Press reports.
PETA wants U-M to stop using animals in training for Survival Flight team members.

The UofM Survival flight training has kill less animals than PETA has. http://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2012/03/petas-terrible-horrible-no-good-very-bad-history-of-killing-animals/254130/

PETA is a bad joke. They can say what they want as long as they don't engage in criminal activity. When they do, treat them as you would treat any terrorist. Long, long, prison stays or execution depending on the offense committed.

Dr. Mark Lowell, Survival Flight's Medical Director, stresses the following point: "There's no rubber-coated mechanical simulator on Earth capable of replicating the experience of performing these incisions on a living being. "The first time one of our nurses is called upon to perform one of these procedures will be for a critically ill patient, and any hesitation or mistake made during the performance of the procedure may result in the patient's death — nurses must be 100 percent prepared to act promptly and correctly." You can read a more detailed explanation of why U-M chooses to use animals in its training program at: http://animal.research.umich.edu/teaching/survivalflight.html You can read the full Op-Ed by Lowell on the topic here: http://bit.ly/fFS0xd -- Ian Demsky, public relations representative, University of Michigan Health System

Your job is to spew propaganda for President Coleman. Why should we trust anything you say.

Giving a Social Justice award to Mary Sue Coleman makes as much sense as giving a Nobel Peace prize to Yasser Arafat!

I don't understand why my comment was removed! I asked a legitimate question. Do PETA members know what is in the dog and cat food the feed their pets?

I believe that PETA is against having pets

All you people bashing PETA for their 'crazy antics...' Look, they've been successful in getting you to talk about them. That's exactly what they want and exactly what the knew would happen. YOU LOSE! PETA - 1 You - 0

I would say that PETA has bigger fish to fry. But they'd probably object to the frying of fish, too.

Gee, it's almost like PETA thinks people care what they think

How does one manipulate the media? Stage a (bogus) protest with a few people to attack a high profile candidate getting recognized for something that has NOTHING to do with your cause ... then watch media outlets like annarbor.com lead with it ... Good work PETA, you have successfully moved the spotlight on to you when you are an outsider to the event! Wow, its that easy!

I am not sure MSC deserves a social justice award considering the trespass policy! But I have NO complaint with animal testing. Does Peta have a position on feral pigs and mute swans in Michigan? Peta would complain if feral pig was snared with a new wire!

Maybe we can replace the animal testing with PETA protestor testing.

I agree but I'd expand that. Testing should only be done on willing human subjects. Other animals don't have a choice and they get none of the benefits. Humans are the ones receiving the benefits. If the benefits are great enough then humans will be willing to pay the price. That's how consensual agreements work. And without using surrogates the testing results will be more accurate.

Giving a social justice award to President Coleman makes about as much sense as giving one to Muammar al-Gaddafi.
