Washtenaw County senior citizens invited to learn how to avoid identity theft tonight

By Ryan J. Stanton

Washtenaw County senior citizens are invited to a special "Senior Brigade" event in Scio Township tonight to learn how to recognize and avoid identity theft.

A representative from the attorney general's office who is considered an expert on senior fraud issues is expected to give a presentation at 6 p.m., including tips to help protect against identify theft and what to do if you become a victim.

The event takes place at the Washtenaw Intermediate School District building at 1819 S. Wagner Road just west of Ann Arbor.

State Rep. Mark Ouimet, R-Scio Township, also will speak and take questions.

"Identity theft is a serious concern for all of us, but senior citizens especially should learn how to avoid this malicious crime," Ouimet said in a statement.

"Scam artists do target older people for financial gain, and the best line of defense is knowledge. I encourage all area seniors to attend this free and informative event."

For more information about the Senior Brigade, call Ouimet's office toll free at 855-627-5052 or email markouimet@house.mi.gov.

Its good to see our State Rep out talking to people about real issues that affect them -- working in the financial industry, I know fraud against senior citizens is an issue.

This is little more than a photo and hand holding opportunity for Mr Ouimet. It gives him a chance to say he actually meets with "the people". I'm sure he feels their pain.

This coming from a guy who voted in favor of pension theft of the seniors on fixed incomes.

State Rep. Mark Ouimet has been located, at least to issue a press release? Wow, I thought we'd have to put his picture on a milk carton after his mysterious disappearance during the Women/Choice/V-Word debate. Fitting it's to bring up scam artists. Lol.

If Mr Ouimet wants to do something to really help seniors he would get Mr Conservative AG Bill Scheutte to stop Rachel from Card Services and other nuisance illegal robo call centers to stop breaking the law.

right on...and also get Nigerians et al . to stop sending e-mails from the widows / sons of deposed dictators telling us that we're in for a share of the Swiss bank accounts if we just forward our personal info. ( my late uncle , a member of the OSS...now CIA-- almost fell for this).

Maybe Ouimet will explain why he supports raising taxes on working people and seniors, and why he supported cutting school aid while giving tax breaks to corporations. Maybe he will tell everyone his position on free speech and why a duly elected female representative was censured by a bunch of white men for using the correct term for a woman's body part.
