Kailasapathy impresses with character, open-mindedness

By Letters to the Editor

I write to wholeheartedly endorse Sumi Kailasapathy for City Council, Ann Arbor. It is a rare opportunity for citizens to vote for such an accomplished, intelligent, and grounded candidate.

Her background is rich and varied: a human rights activist in Sri Lanka for social justice, a professor at EMU for 10 years, a respected CPA, and a community volunteer all make her ideal for understanding both the voices and needs of the citizens and the financial and technical works of city government. Though she graduated with highest honors from Wellesley and the New School for Social Research, it is her character and open-mindedness that impresses.

The city faces difficult decisions ahead and we need an independent, wise, and hard-working representative. Sumi Kailasapathy is that person.

It's amazing, from one comment above, the Mayor's pals are circling the wagons and tossing out ludicrous statements like, those in the Council primary election who won't be rubber stamps are somehow Tea Party-ish. Lol. It's a hoot because The Mayor is practically glued to the Governor at the hip, he doesn't want a downtown park on top of the new $60 Million Underground parking structure because someone would have to mow it (lol) and he actions over the past two years have celebrating union bashing. Sounds way more like a Tea Party guy to me than anyone running against his rubber stamps on Council. Sumi is clearly the best candidate in the 1st Ward, while her opponent is probably the worse to run in the past twenty years. Tea Party is all you got left? Funny!

I've yet to see her take a firm, substantive position on anything other than to say it's broken (which isn't a position, just a judgment without a fix in the offing). Being an accountant has little to no bearing on her ability to serve and, more importantly, work with others, and "everything is broke/ I'm against everything but more police and firemen" stance I'm far from confident that she'll actually be able work and find compromises with others of different views (perhaps she's following the Tea Party model). What makes her an easy choice is our short memories which leave behind her less than professional conduct the last time she ran for office and, most importantly, her competition.

Snmi would make a wonderful addition to the city council.Shes the type of person who will not become "a yes man" to the mayor and help shift the balance of power away frm the "good ole boys" network. Elect SUMI to the city council.

Mr. Blake is right. Kailasapathy can make a real difference on City Council with her breadth of experience and her superior education.

Sumi is probably one of the best candidates to come along for City Council in the past decade. The 1st Ward is fortunate to have her running for this position. When compared to her hand picked Party Council opponent in the August Democratic Party primary, the choice is obvious--Ms. Kailasapathy is a slam dunk with the vision, independence and financial background this city needs.
