Kailasapathy displays values needed for 1st Ward council nomination

By Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor, Sumi Kailasapathy is by far the best choice for the Democratic nomination for the First Ward council position August 7. Ms. Kailasapathy is an accountant with progressive values who will bring much needed skills to the challenging work of council.

Ms. Kailasapathy will be an advocate for those most in need in the community and has the intelligence and courage to confront the difficult budgetary issues our city now faces. She will advocate for efficiency in local government and will be an independent voice on council. She is clearly the most qualified candidate for Democrats this August 7. I encourage all First Ward Democrats to support Sumi Kailasapathy for First Ward council. Sincerely,

Tim Colenback

I wonder about Ms. Kailasapathy. Guilt by association perhaps, but she tied her wagon to Pat Lesko's star in the last election, and I have significant doubts about anyone who would do that. Also, the whole fiasco about her campaign signs apparently turned into a shouting match with her opponent. I'm not sure I want a council member who thinks it's appropriate to scream at people. Which is why, in 2010, the AnnArbor.com endorsed Ms. Ms. Kailasapathy? She's a slam dunk as the obvious choice for City Council in 2012. He opponent is...eh, lack in many of the skills needed for the positions--campaign sign lifted relatives aside.

Three negatives. Probably all from Lesko supporters.

Sumi wins by default - her opponent is a 26-year old college student who does not even belong in the race.

Sumi should win by a landslide.Mr Sturgis is out of his league. At least we wont have a council member who bends at the whims of the mayor.Go Sumi, youd be a refreshing change instead of the good ole boys network like Tony D who i hope gets a drubbing by Sally Hrt-Petersen.There needs to be a major overhaul at city council.

I am a lifelong Democrat who loses sleep most nights shuddering at the thought of a Mitt Romney Presidency. I have always said that I do not believe in one-party government, but if we have to have it, let it be run by Democrats. Now that we have it, however, we begin to see some of the problems, and one of them is that "hot" new ideas often get proposed with the best of intentions, but they do not always get the kind of careful scrutiny they need. One example would be the pedestrian ordinance; another would be the silly coupon scheme for encouraging recycling that cost taxpayers something like $100 K a year. To have someone like Sumi on Council--skilled at financial analysis but still dedicated to humane values--would be a wonderful addition.

There are national political issues that have no relevance locally and local issues that have no national implications. Party labels at the City Council level may not reflect nor predict the positions of City Council members on local issues, like the type of preferred downtown development, or the 1%-for-art debate, or transportation and parks issues. Each Council candidate can be assessed on his or her personal biases as well as expected responsiveness to electorate opinions.

What are " progressive values" "Ms. Kailasapathy is an accountant with progressive values" Sounds like the code word for Pro-Union, Pro-Tax, Pro-Spend and Anti-Business to me!

You do not understand and you are so dedicated to Republican mantra that it is not worth anyone's time attempting to explain.

Kailasapathy will bring a breath of fresh air to a City Council that badly needs it.

Not quite, Billy - her democrat opponent in the First Ward is neither incumbent nor competent!

Not only is Sumi Kailasapathy the best candidate for the August primary, she's probably one of the best candidates to run for City Council in the last decade. The 1st Ward would be fortunate to have Ms. Kailasapathy as their representative.
