School enhancement millage is needed
I disagree with Wyckham Seelig's comments concerning a tax increase for schools. If he opposes a millage increase that is his prerogative but don't hide behind the Washtenaw County Republican Party tag unless you have polled each one of us individually.
Had you and your cohorts done something in Lansing this situation would not exist. I believe the only way our schools will continue to prosper in this current environment is through a millage increase. I have lived in Ann Arbor for 45 years and have voted for every school mileage that was presented. There is no greater gift we can give a young student than an opportunity to receive a good education.

It sounds good Max but what about the folks who can't afford more taxes. those folks who are already stretching the dollar. what about the children of those folks? Where does it end? If you had to choose between an extra $200.00 a year or paying for your heat, water, medications, or your kids dental check up, how would you vote? Maybe a little fiscal restraint is in order on the part of school administrators rather than raising taxes. We should be voting on a city income tax instead of a millage.

Zulu - "I question the viability of the current leadership in the schools. Maybe there needs to be some changes there". Maybe those changes need to come from the "entitlement" philosophy of the MEA. It goes both ways with administration and union.

I think its great that you have supported school millages for 45 years. However, we are living at a time when people are losing their homes, they don't have jobs, health insurance and other amenities that are important to a good quality of life in our community. The quality of education is not going to suffer if a millage is not passed and if it does, I question the viability of the current leadership in the schools. Maybe there needs to be some changes there. Go right ahead and vote for the millage but I will vote against it so my vote actually cancel yours out. I will also campaign vigrously against a millage approval.

Governor Granholm vetoed $3.7 million specifically earmarked for the AAPS (the "hold harmless" funding), so AA schools are going to be trying to operate on that much less. And if you listened to the Governor's radio address this morning, that might not be the end of the cuts to education. If education is really a priority in AA, then now is the time to step up. Thank god we have the chance to vote on additional millage on 11/3. The average homeowner's share of the millage ($200) is a good investment in your property values as well as the education of the children of this county.
