Rise & Fall: Holiday volunteers and Black Thursday

One is a special group of people taking time out of their Thanksgiving holiday to recognize the needs of others. The other is an addition to an already extensive work schedule.

Rise: Holiday volunteers

We all know that the holiday season is about being thankful for what you have and giving back, but there's some people who really take that to heart and do something about it. All the people volunteering at the various outlets offered throughout Washtenaw County — whether that means helping out with meals or simply donating to a good cause — are a great example of citizens embracing the true holiday season and giving back to their community.

Fall: Black Thursday

Thursday is the new Friday — at least when it comes to doorbuster sales. Many big-box stores announced this month that not only will they uphold the arguably insane Black Friday opening hours, but they will go one step further and open on Thanksgiving night. Aside from not being able to imagine participating, it leaves us wondering how the workers must feel. It was bad enough to make them work through the chaos of Black Friday, but we have to wonder if the extra time is really worth it.
