Rise & Fall: Yost Ice Arena and Ypsilanti Fire Department
One is being recognized for making improvements while remembering to honor tradition; the other is coming to terms with not receiving a grant, causing them to have to let go of some staff. These are AnnArbor.com's picks for a winner and loser in the news last week:
The “old barn” has long stood as a landmark at the southern edge of the University of Michigan Athletic Campus along South State Street, maintaining its dignity amid years of massive renovation and construction around it. But during the past months, it was Yost’s turn at a facelift, as U-M invested $16 million into improvements. Initial community and team feedback signals that U-M took all the right steps. The interior is bright and fresh, the scoreboard is state-of-the-art (and a little whimsical, thanks to the puck design) and the building feels revived — even as the new Yost honors the Michigan tradition by retaining the exterior.
Ypsilanti learned this week that it won’t receive $1.3 million federal grant to maintain fire department staffing - money retiring Fire Chief Jon Ichesco called crucial to his department’s future. YFD is losing three positions this year through attrition, and another four jobs could be on the chopping block for 2014. Those cuts would leave the city with about a dozen active firefighters — about one-third of levels in the 1980s. The city is reapplying for the grant, but the denial of the funding leaves Ypsilanti on the front lines of Michigan’s cash-strapped cities fighting to maintain services.

I still like the idea of having the township provide fire service for the city and maybe the City contracting with the township to provide police services instead of the sheriff.

I like the idea of having one person being a firefighter/policeman. Of course we would pay them more. In a lot of cities firemen handle one call per day. Its a necessary evil for them to sit around waiting. Why not put them on patrol while they are waiting to fight fires. I know there is a lot of logistics issues to this plan but it could be done. It would save money and put more police on the street.

Being a predominant democrat city sure did not help Ypsi receive the needed federal grant. Maybe the city should apply for a green energy grant, Washington is handing those out to everyone.

I've heard mixed reviews on the new Yost. People I know who have been multi-sport season ticket holders for decades say the sound is better in some places but not others. they also are really really unhappy that they got moved to a section that it not half as good as their section last year. They don't plan to renew their tickets next year.....

They need to reconfigure fire departments. The state needs to handle this. Every city has there own firefighter and it seems like a lot of waste. Plymouth is getting rid of some of there stations and going in with Canton and Northville for coverage. Plymouth and Canton had fire departments less than a half of mile away from each other. Just seems to be a better way to cover the area's.
