Letter to the Editor: Mortgage loan modifications are risky option
Am I supposed to believe 4 percent of mortgage loan modifications are sufficient? BAC-Bank of America modifies 4 percent of their eligible home loans. I hope they only received 4 percent of the stimulus package money, but I bet not. That is criminal. I read statistics that modifications range from 0-25%.
BAC, my mortgage company, offered me a four-month $400 drop per month in my payment; but at the end of four months, they could call in ALL the difference ($1600). An attorney suggested I bank the difference each month, so if they did, I could pay them. If an emergency arose and I needed the money and spent it, I’m in foreclosure.
So, what did I accomplish?
I’m trying to get an offer for something that will help AND not put me at risk. I haven’t heard from my bank. I wonder why. Are they trying to make money off those who can’t afford it?
As a Realtor, I learned a contract’s goal was win-win. One side shouldn’t hurt the other. Would they want to do further business, or refer their friends? It’s shortsighted, not good business. But I guess that’s what got them into this mess.
I wonder why the government isn’t holding the bank’s feet to the fire on the money.
It’s hard to believe President Obama and the rest of his team, so cautious with the auto companies, couldn’t see the banks might need guidelines.
By the way, I am on disability, cannot work due to a brain tumor and radiation, and do get some income (SSD). So please don’t assume I’m playing the system. I worked and paid taxes as long as I could.
There but for “luck of the draw” it could be you or someone you know and love.
I hope not.

As a former Loan Officer myself, I do now, and have always believed, mortgages should be available to anyone at no more than 1 percent. I'm going to have to go with Janice on this one. And I don't get it. The Fed rate is at almost zero anyway. Why do the banks have to charge so much more for letting the money just sit there? Doesn't anyone care about anything anymore? I don't get it. It's really frustrating. And completely stupid, one should add.
