Hunger bigger issue in many American communities than some would assume

By Letters to the Editor

The face of hunger is often invisible to many of us, depending upon where we live. The reality, though, is that hunger exists in every American community.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) has been there to help those families in need. It has been one of the most effective safety net programs and in the year 2010 alone it lifted 3.9 million people out of poverty.

It is disheartening that the House Agriculture Committee’s Farm Bill cuts $16.5 billion from SNAP. Members of Congress need to know that attempting to balance the budget by taking from those who have the least is unacceptable. Stand up and work to end hunger in America by letting congressmen know you support SNAP and joining in the Ann Arbor CROP walk Oct. 14 at Bethlehem UCC. Registration is at 1 p.m. and the walk begins at 2 p.m.

I agree wholeheartedly with Barbara. My wife and I were on food stamps a few years ago and it was a godsend for sure!!!

Richard to answer your question the answer is NO it was not like this under Bush. Consider the following: http://www.trivisonno.com/wp-content/uploads/Food-Stamps-Yearly.jpg

Some folk's charity is always with other folk's money and by force. Being rich is defined by giving your own money. As Reagan put it, "In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem."

If this is all Obama's fault, why was this also the case during the Bush administration ?

Four years later and it's still on Bush. How long can you play the blame game? A good leader would have worked towards making cuts, balancing the budget, and creating an environment friendly to jobs. So far not one budget, no jobs, and onerous regulation. That is definitely not Bush..........all this writing has made me want some Kool-aid

Why blame someone other than the person in office now? The problem we have today is our current leaders refuse to take responsibility. If they did, they would do something about the issue. It really does not matter who created the problem. We are hoping that our current leaders will solve the problem.

Not having hungry children should be something we can all agree on. Save your anger for the unregulated financial industry, corrupt lobbyists, runaway corporate greed.

This is the residue of the failed Obama economic policies. Get the economy moving again and the "cut" will be replaced with people on the tax rolls. Obama is incapable of doing that.

The SNAP program is not a failed policy. Maybe you are just doing well enough to not go hungry. That doesn't give you the right to knock people who go hungry!!!

O'Bama is in office! This can't be! One third of our population is on some sort of government program (welfare, food stamps, Medicaid, SS disability, etc.), not including Medicare & SS (we pay for these direct) and still people are going hungrey? This can't be!

So 46 million people on Food Stamps is not enough ?

Whether it's 46 million people or 100 million people shouldn't matter!!! Hungry people need help!!!

Hope and change.......how's it working for you. I guess being eligible for food stamps is one form of "change". If you own a business you can "hope" you don't get ensnared in government regulations and get put out of business............
