Granholm's budget plan fails to address needed government reforms
An editorial in The Detroit News today takes Gov. Jennifer Granholm to task for a budget plan that focuses mainly on spending cuts and tax increases rather than government reforms to close the gaping hole in Michigan's budget.
"Ignored in the governor's plan ... is House Speaker Andy Dillon's proposal for saving up to $900 million on public worker health care costs for all levels of government," the editorial says. Dillon, D-Redford Township, wants to put state, city and county workers and public school teachers into a state risk pool and standardize their benefits.
"Dillon's plan is among reforms that should be in the mix as Granholm negotiates a budget deal with legislative leaders," the editorial says. ... "If those came first, we'd have more confidence government was making an earnest effort to live within its means."
