Deb Mexicotte an intelligent, experienced choice for Ann Arbor School Board

By Letters to the Editor

I strongly endorse Deb Mexicotte for the Ann Arbor School Board, and urge you to support her candidacy.

Deb has served tirelessly on the Board of Education since 2003 and has been a strong advocate for the children of our district. She supports high achievement for all students, a rich arts and music curriculum, and opportunities for students with special needs. Throughout the years, I have been impressed by her leadership and vision, and her ability to focus on the true goals of public education.

As we continue to see public education decimated through the state government, it's more important than ever to have intelligent, experienced leadership on our school board, and Deb Mexicotte brings these skills to our schools. Remember to vote for Deb Mexicotte on Tuesday, Nov. 6.

This woman needs to be voted out of office. She continues to ignore those who know that Balais overhead needs to be cleaned out and refuses to do such. She is aiming to privatize the spokes and keep the hub intact. Balais is an overhead nightmare in regards to the budget. The government is doing it and I can't figure out why this woman refuses to mainstream Balais. Vote her out of office. We need a clean slate on the BOE. Lets clean up the administration and keep the spokes intact.

Sorry, I cannot support the re-election of a board member who presided over (and supported) many poor decisions in the past few years, not the least of which is the outrageous salary offered during the hiring of the most recent superintendent. It showed very poor judgement for many reasons, and therefore I think it's time to try to find someone else who can make better decisions.

For the money they spent, they could have got better than a part-timing double-dipping out-of-state carpetbagger. They even give her extra pay to not take the health benefits. I would guess she already has those in Pa. as part of her retirement benefit there.

It will be interesting to hear what Deb Mexicotte has to say about the Pioneer-Huron brawl, the suspensions handed out, and the district's existing discipline policies. The following quotes are directly from the Top Stories section: 'Ann Arbor Pioneer-Huron football brawl: Should suspended coaches be permitted at practice?' School board President Deb Mexicotte seconded Stead's expectation that the brawl will be a topic of conversation at Wednesday's board meeting. "Because this was such a serious matter, this gives us the opportunity to look at the policies and procedures we have in place to make sure they are align (sic) with what we believe should happen in the future," she said. "And if any suggestions need to be made, to do it now as the incident is fresh in our minds." Items typically are not placed on the board's agenda until there has been at least some discussion around the board table about them, Mexicotte said.

So they waste time on discussions that are not part of the agenda, then add them to the agenda when the outcome has already been determined. Sounds like an illegal closed session.

Just say "NO" to incumbents. We need a Board that demonstrates leadership. This week the Board and Administration came up woefully short.

Listen to Stephen. He knows what he is talking about. Another sane person who knows what I keep yelling about. Mainstream Balais.

Her statements about things like being surprised at a multimillion dollar account make her NOT qualified to be reelected.

The platitudes in this endorsement letter notwithstanding, the President of the School Board should be held accountable for the long string of policy fiascos, of which the latest is the limp reaction to the footbal game brawl.

It was the Superintendent's Statement that was released, not the President's. PLEASE get the facts straight before posting.

Ms. Johnson - So we can: 1) Continue to increase the overhead costs of the schools? 2) Fund athletics over art, science and other academics? 3) Layoff teachers instead of administrators? 4) Increase pay at 2 AM for administrators? 5) Be told to use an Freedom of Information Filing for basic information? 6) Be told that any thing that can even be slightly related to people is protected by privacy (e.g. the number of students suspended for fighting - not the names just the total number)? 7) See contracts that promise a percentage of all future increases in revenue to the people covered by the contract - regardless of amount or source? 8) See a board completely uninvolved in the actual budget process, rather have them accept what the administration proposes with almost no discussion or fact finding? Sounds good to me.
