A winter walk: Contemplating the cost of abortion

By Letters to the Editor

On my walk on Sunday, Jan. 30, it was a beautiful, sunny, blue-sky day, with a lot of fresh snow still on the ground.

However, I noticed something missing.’

There were no snowmen!

Why?

Perhaps the kids were too busy watching TV or their laptop computers or their other electronic gadgets that all kids own nowadays.

Perhaps kids just don’t enjoy playing outdoors any more.

Or perhaps there just are not that many kids around any more.

Or perhaps one of the reasons is because so many of the potential "snowmen makers" have been aborted!

Over 50 million in United States alone since Roe vs Wade 38 years ago in 1973!

What will it take to get the snowmen back? Howard H. Schafer Ann Arbor

Howard, did you miss the snowman building competition in Saline? http://www.annarbor.com/news/saline/saline-community-tops-in-snowman-building-competition-at-winterfest/

Excuse me, but why was this even published? How does this enrich anyone's life? What actual basis is there for the ideas presented here? Is he seriously implying that the lack of snowmen on his morning walks is due to the supposedly high number of abortions...? Really?

This is one of the strangest, most ridiculous and disturbing things I have ever read. Just sayin'.

I must admit that this is a strange post. First, I find it highly questionable to correlate the number of snowmen to the number of children. Is anyone suggesting that the sheer numbers of children aren't increasing? Possibly demographics in some communities shift but a shortage of children is laughable. Second, who cares about how many snowmen we have? Do snowmen indicate a quality of life or vibrancy for a city? I prefer seeing untouched snow, personally, rather than a bunch of mostly amateurish looking sculptures with twigs for arms. The joy in a snowman comes from being a father or mother. Third, this is simply another launching of an anti-abortion campaign based on a strange attempt at something nostalgic. It didn't work. Howard, did you see the recent article about infant mortality rates in Washtenaw county? Maybe you should volunteer for educating mothers rather than counting snowmen.

Another explanation ... The lack of snow creatures may have to do with the type of snow on the ground. My two children have tried to build a snowman, but it just wasn't working.

Howard, I definitely think that you should never, ever have an abortion !!

Well this shows that the Ann Arbor News.com will post any comment. There clearly is no prerequisite that the opinion be enlightened, true, informed, instructive, illuminating, clarifying or in any way helpful or relevant. I will repeat 50 times; I am thankful for freedom of the press.....

The real reason there are no snowmen is this.It has been TOO cold. The snow will not pack!
