One person killed in I-94 crash near Ellsworth Road

By Julie Baker

Michigan State Police have confirmed that one person died as a result of the westbound Interstate 94 crash Friday near Ellsworth Road.

Police did not immediately have any details to release as troopers were still investigating, MSP Sgt. Mark Thompson said in an email.

The accident occurred shortly after 10 a.m. and shut down both lanes of westbound I-94 for at least two hours. In a Nixle alert issued around 12:25 p.m., the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office reported that the lanes were open.

Huron Valley Ambulance spokeswoman Joyce Williams previously told AnnArbor.com that at least two vehicles were involved in the accident.

Williams said shortly after the crash that HVA transported two patients to University of Michigan Hospital. At the time, one person was in stable condition and the other person, transported by a second HVA unit, was in critical condition.

Michigan State Police expected to release more details on the crash Friday afternoon.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

I drove by in the last moments of cleanup. The Jeep had Colorado plates on it.

I have been commuting between Ann Arbor & my businesses in the Downriver area & Ontario, Canada since 1997. Every time a fatality occurs I feel like I've lost a family member because, like me, there are so many who drive these corridors every day. Things can & have happened on the freeway in the blink of an eye. My prayers go out this individual & his/her family.

I was the first person on the scene of that crash, as well as another motorist who stopped to help. It deeply saddens me to learn of this news. Prayers go out to the family and to those involved. If anyone has further information, I would appreciate it. Thank you.

I was passing eastbound not too long after the accident happened. I saw an older late nineties Jeep Chereokee that had a crushed roof, caved in on the passenger side. Appeared to be a rollover, it was sitting in the middle of the two westbound lanes in I-94 right around where SB US-23 enters into I-94 WB. As I drove by I said a prayer and hoped no one died, sorry to see that someone did. My worries for today just vanished.
