Old transformer falls over, creates 75-yard-long oil slick in Scio Township
- Updated story: Scio Township firefighters awaiting HAZMAT test results to clean up oil spill from old transformer
An old transformer has tipped over near Marshall and Zeeb roads, sending a 75-yard oil slick down the south side of Marshall Road in Scio Township, fire officials said.
Scio Township Fire Chief Carl Ferch said firefighters were in the early stages of their investigation at about 4:45 p.m. Thursday and were not sure how the transformer fell over. The oil in the transformer that was leaking onto the road was believed to be biodegradable, but Ferch said that was still being determined.
Ferch said the directors of the Washtenaw County Hazardarous Materials Team, the Washtenaw County Health Department and the Department of Environmental Quality’s cleanup team had been notified of the accident.
Ferch was on-scene and unable to comment further Thursday afternoon.

There was a tow truck there at 4:15 doing something with the old transformer. Did they dump it or tip it over trying to load it?

There's a house on the south side of Marshall that can be seen as one drives north on Zeeb, approaching Marshall's east end. Surely the Washtenaw County Hazardous Materials Team notified the residents. Happened just one intersection east of where Gary Lillie was hit last year.
