By Juliana Keeping

This private maternity room is among 50 at the new women’s hospital. There are also four C-Section rooms.

"$754 million C.S. Mott Children's Hospital and Von Voigtlander Women's Hospital" Wow, what an expense. No wonder health care costs so much. While private rooms are nice, why do they need to be so big? I thrived in a much smaller dorm room while in college. The sad thing is that people do not even have the option of a smaller, less expensive room, one that will cost their insurance company or if they have none, themselves or teh taxpayer less. This is wrong. I rather spend the money on a nice hotel room later on, or on baby clothes, or my parents... This exacerbates unafordable health care. Nice rooms, but what an expense.

"So big?" How big is a room? The picture in the article does not show an unusually large room, in my opinion. Remember that the room must accommodate a stretcher for transferring the patient to and from the bed. Also a team of 5 or 6 health care providers gathering in the room to evaluate and administer care must have some room. There should be room for portable testing devices such as X-ray and ultrasound equipment. And, finally, visitors should be comfortable and, in some cases, a relative or friend will be allowed to sleep in the room over night in a "geri-" chair (an over-sized recliner).

Is this how UM tries to control the cost of health care?

Have you ever gotten to share a room with another woman and a bathroom with 3 other women after giving birth? The private rooms will be welcomed by all women in labor.

Unfortunately with all of the superbugs (infections) private rooms are pretty much necessary.
