Ned Staebler out-raising Jeff Irwin for 53rd District state House seat
If money is any measure of voters' feelings in the state House's 53rd District race, Ann Arbor's Ned Staebler has a nearly 2-to-1 edge over opponent Jeff Irwin.
Campaign finance statements due today show Staebler has raised $40,850, compared to Irwin's $24,299. The two Ann Arbor Democrats are competing for the seat being vacated by state Rep. Rebekah Warren, D-Ann Arbor, who is running for the 18th District state Senate seat.
"In a year that proved to be a very difficult fundraising environment, more than 240 individuals made the decision to invest in our campaign to build a more prosperous future for Michigan," Staebler announced in a letter to his supporters today. "I am honored and humbled by your support. Importantly, we received an outpouring of local support. We raised nearly $26,000 from 161 individuals in the city of Ann Arbor."
Irwin raised $5,360 from 54 individuals in Ann Arbor. All total, Staebler received 242 donations compared to Irwin's 156.
Staebler's biggest single group of donors appears to be Ann Arbor's legal community. More than two dozen attorneys donated a total of $9,335 to his campaign. Staebler also raised nearly $5,000 from individuals with ties to the real estate and financial services industries.
A large portion of Irwin's money came from political action committees ($4,424), lobbyists ($4,375), and donors with links to the Michigan Education Association and Michigan Education Special Services Association ($3,825). Staebler has not accepted any money from PACs or lobbyists.
Irwin, a current Washtenaw County commissioner serving the 11th District, addressed his acceptance of PAC money.
"I made the decision in my campaign that if individuals or political action committees were seeking to support my campaign, based on the message that I bring to the table, then obviously I'm going to accept their support," he said. "I was a bit surprised to get support from DTE, for instance, because of my work in the environmental field and there are times that we butt heads. "
Irwin said he's satisfied with where his campaign stands.
"I'm getting a tremendous amount of support from the people I speak with and the list is building, so I'm comfortable with the way the campaign is shaping up," he said. "I am deeply honored to have the level of support that I do from people who want the best public schools and the best public school teachers. I am sure that Ned Staebler is similarly pleased to have the support he does from the legal and financial sectors."
Staebler managed to raise more money for his state representative campaign than Alma Wheeler Smith, D-Salem Township, has raised in her bid for governor of Michigan.
Smith, currently the state representative for the 54th House District, has raised just $36,245 this election cycle, according to campaign finance statements filed today. The reports cover the period from Feb. 17, 2009, to Dec. 31, 2009.

Mr. Irwin all modern "Liberals" are statists, that is, they believe that they and the nanny State know better than the individual. That is why they are continually trampling on our liberties. Liberal refers to liberty -- tell me, did you support Obama's view on the Union card check issue? Yeah, nothing like the FREEDOM to join or not-join a union (but I digress). Mr. Steabler may indeed be a statist, but he does not have a track record that we could point to, you do. Remember it doesn't have to do with an R or the D, they both can be statist and until people realize this we will continue to lose the freedom's our Fore Fathers bestowed upon us. And without those we will be nothing more than slaves to the State.

Frankly, Staebler's connections in Lansing make him the candidate that should be elected. You want somebody who can get things done and understands what that takes, Someone who can play to both sides of the aisle while still identifying with a certain consensus. You will not get that type of person if Irwin is elected. Remember people, this is the same person who passed on some mills to you the day after the countywide election asking us for mills for education was defeated. Oh, and once again, thank you Mr. Prater for one of only two no votes on that issue.

"Real estate developers and financial services firms combined to contribute nearly $5,000 more to Staebler's total." It should also be mentioned that Staebler works at MEDC and thus has powerful connections and capabilities to influence financial decisions benefiting individuals and firms. I don't intend to say that anything improper has occurred, but that is surely a factor in his more successful fundraising. I've known Jeff since he first entered public life as a new county commissioner. He is a conscientious public servant and is careful of the public's money (he supported efforts to reduce the commissioners' benefits). I'm sorry to see the usual (anonymous) cynical responses to anyone in public life.

It's exciting to see the interest in this election heating up. We're at a critical time in Ann Arbor and the struggles with our state budget and our future quality of life are real and acute. A "liberal?" Yes. A statist?! Absolutely not. We need to meet 'Jeffersonian Liberal.' I suspect we might agree more than you would guess. When you drill down through ideology and into the details; sometimes the answers aren't left or right so much as they are up or down. In any event, I look forward to meeting all of the voters and continuing to contribute to our wonderful city and state. jeffmirwin@gmail.com.

Great, more tax and spend Democrats. Money from lawyers and teachers unions. What's the difference between these two?

djm12652, the two parties are within the same party. You have a Liberal statist backed by the unions and a canidate who appears to be a democrat in name only. I don't know anything about Mr. Staebler, but someone with the integrity and the guts not to except union money would have my vote.
