Near North affordable housing project receives blessing from Ann Arbor City Council

By Ryan J. Stanton

The Ann Arbor City Council voted unanimously Monday night to approve a planned unit development for Near North, a 39-unit affordable housing project on 1.19 acres of land at 626-724 North Main St.

Developers and property owners announced at a meeting earlier this month that they had agreed upon a revised plan for the project, which council members decided Monday night they were comfortable with.

Representatives of Avalon Housing and the Three Oaks Group, the two organizations collaborating on the four-story apartment complex near downtown Ann Arbor, have been in close talks with the North Central Property Owners Association, which until recently opposed the project.

NCPOA representatives said the group supports the project now that the developer has agreed to make the building one story shorter and to increase setbacks to allow for the planting of mature trees.

But the property owners group says it still has concerns about the future of Ann Arbor's near downtown neighborhoods.

Well done. I'm glad to see that there was a compromise reached between the developers, Avalon, and the neighborhood. It would have been easy to dig in and not compromise, I think this shows how development should work.
