The driver was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Superior Township after the accident occurred shortly before 4 p.m., Pittsfield Township Fire Commander Sean Gleason said.

The man's car went off the road, hit the pole and rolled several times, Gleason said. It took firefighters 15 minutes using the Jaws of Life to extricate the man.

State Road was closed north of Textile near Payeur Road, said Pittsfield Township Deputy Police Chief Gordy Schick.

Schick said the cause of the crash remained undetermined as of about 6 p.m., though accident investigators were talking to several witnesses.

"It looks like he was passing (a vehicle) on the shoulder and lost control," Schick said.

The driver, a 36-year-old Ann Arbor man, was in serious but stable condition at 6 p.m., Schick said.

Yes there may have been a problem with his car but passing on the shoulder is very common it seems. I drive State Road everyday and drivers are passing right/shoulder almost every time a car slows ahead of them to turn into a driveway. It happens in front of Saline Flowerland on Michigan Ave. We have become so impatient as drivers plus the reduction in the number of police patrols has contributed to an increased aggressiveness in drivers.

It appeared to my son that his breaks were not working and that is why he could not slow down and eventually went off the road. I wonder if he went off the road to avoid hurting others.

Thanks, Bob. That answered my question. Though I don't drive that area often myself, I have noticed there seem to be quite a few accidents in that general area. Now I know why.

I agree with you Bob! If the driver had been experiencing problems with his car and it was indeed filling with smoke, I have to wonder why he didn't pull over and get out. Again ... prayers and well wishes for this young man. I too travel State Rd daily. (twice a day) and I can count on one had the number of times I've seen a patrol car between I-94 and Michigan Ave.

My son was one of the cars that he passed. He said the driver had his hazard lights on and his car was full of smoke. He was going very fast and passed several cars. My son was interviewed by the police and Im wondering why the article above makes it sound like the drivers fault when clearly something was very wrong with the vehicle. It was very upsetting for my son and our thoughts are with the driver and his family.

I feel badly that your son witnessed this. I'm sure it was very difficult for him. I'm glad he was able to speak to the police and give an accounting of what he saw. Here's hoping the trauma of the accident is eased somewhat today.

State Road was still closed as of 6:45pm. It IS State Road at that point. Prayers and well wishes to the injured driver.

Sometimes one tries too hard to "correct" the articles.

Actually, at that point it is State Road. The columnist is correct.

Confused....."A man IS in critical condition after his car .... " or "The driver, a 36-year-old Ann Arbor man, was in serious but stable condition." So which one is it? Critical or Serious but stable? Thanks
