Michigan sees gas prices rise to second highest in U.S.
According to AAA, Michigan’s average gas price was $4.11 per gallon Wednesday, MLive reported. That is the second-highest average in the U.S., the highest being Hawaii — with an average of $4.35 per gallon.
The increase began earlier this week when prices throughout Michigan at the pump spiked above $4.
This time in May 2011, the state's average was floating around $4.26 per gallon, MLive reported.
The lowest gas price of regular unleaded in Washtenaw County as of Wednesday afternoon was $3.74 per gallon at the Costco at 771 Airport Blvd., near State Street and Ellsworth Road, according to MichiganGasPrices.com. The highest price in the area was $4.49 at a BP on 3550 Plymouth Road near Green Road in Ann Arbor — 40 cents above the Michigan average.

One of Bill Clinton's last acts as president was to have the EPA set up different gas formulas for different regions of the country. It's illegal to sell anything other than the approved formula for your region. This created mini-monopolies for refineries around the country. Clinton was rewarded with large donations from oil industry to pay off his legal debts. Now when there is a gas shortage in Michigan, you don't see refineries in Ohio or Indiana shipping gas north to make a few bucks and ease the shortage. That's because they'd have to switch over to a different gas formula and they can't afford to do that. Every president since Clinton has kept this policy (Bush talked about eliminating, but gave that a pass) in place and they all have reaped oil industry donations.

If you love The Market, and the ability of people who have zero use for oil and gas to drive up your costs, then enjoy the rewards. Ayn and Adam Smith would love the high prices. Not only that, but it will make wealthy investors even wealthier, and then they will hire more people. That is the way it works, isn't it? It is not like average folks would spend that extra money on goods, and that would create demand for those goods which would lead to higher employment. Nope, better to focus that wealth at the top and let them decide where to create jobs. It's all good. High gas prices just show us that everything is working the way it should in the Market.

I thought those enbridge pipelines I keep reading about in the news - you know, the ones that are leaking and damaging our roads - are supposed to lower gas prices. And yet here we are.

And Snyder wants to dramatically raise the gas tax. Supposedly to pay for the roads, which studies show are primarily damaged by heavy trucks. Apparently he doesn't want them to pay for the damage. The man recently said in an interview that he *does not even drive*. The governor of the motor capitol of the world does not drive.

Michigan is #1 in the continental USA for gasoline prices. I count this as another top-ten listing for Ann Arbor.

I just want to make sure I have WALKER101's logic down... In earlier posts he made it pretty clear that the gas price was 1.87 in Jan 2009 and that the jump to 3.79 last year and the jump to 3.99+ this year were due to ...Obama. We did not have .com in spring of 2008, when gas was averaging $4.19 across the whole country, did WALKER blame that nation wide price on the then president? But, when Snyder took office gas was $2.79/gal and is now $4.15/gal, only in Michigan. So, is it or is it not the fault of the guy in charge at the time?

I can understand how the MI governor and AG might influence gas prices in MI, but probably don't have much effect. But, how do Harry Reid, Lisa Jackson and Henry Waxman manipulate gas prices in MI while leaving them alone in the other 49 states?

If that being the case, then he is responsible for the rest of the country gas prices, your better off telling us it's Bushes fault.
