Michigan Legislature passes budget

By Paula Gardner

The state Legislature passed the 2012 budget today, sending it on to Gov. Rick Snyder for his signature, according to the Detroit News.

The move comes a day after Snyder finalized a series of tax reforms in Michigan.

The budget cuts public school and university funding, among other measures.

"At the expense of seniors" pulling down 50,000 dollar public pensions while "low income" workers pay taxes to support the extravegant benefits of government employees. Are you for real John Q? How could you possible think it fair for small businesses to be double taxed by paying businesses taxes and personal taxes? Why would you think it's fair for 50,000 grand in pension "income" not to be taxes while any income is taxed a the state level? Tell me more John Q but try to use specifics instead of "seniors" and "cut in taxes".

Dems had 8 years and we experienced the results. Gov. Snyder is dealing with hard choices left to him. Time will tell if his plan is successful. In the mean time Dems will whine and complain and offer no realistic alternatives, except to repeat the mistakes of the past.

Great to know that you think Calley's incompetence should be rewarded with a promotion.

It's great to hear that Mr. Calley got behind a better idea yet. Now that's truly progressive.

"Dems had 8 years and we experienced the results. " Revisionist history. The Dems never controlled the House, Senate and Governorship. The Republicans controlled the House and Senate for the first 4 years that Granholm was Governor and the Senate for all eight years. Brian Calley, the current Lt. Gov. was one of the architects of the Michigan Business Tax that the Republicans now say was so terrible.

So now that the business climate in Michigan is TeaPublican perfect the jobs will just "trickle down". Everything will now be Ronnie Reagan Perfect! Now, if only grandma and the invalids will kick in some more we can all afford that second vacation home!!

Now perhaps Michigan can dig out of the last Governors Single State recession: one million lost jobs, collapsing salaries, collapsing investment, years of zero population growth, more residents on State Aid then every recorded, sky high unemployment, sky high foreclosures, sky high mortgages under water, property values falling like a rock, businesses scrambling to move out of state, falling State GDP - and those are just the economic trends. Finally, Lansing is making some tough decisions.

Last time I checked neither the plumber I call nor the electrician are rich. They are the kinds of people who are getting tax cuts, not the CEOs of Ford and GM

"The governor is trying to create jobs by allowing businesses to have more funds for growth, and the left only thinks the money is going into the CEO's back pocket." Lots of businesses aren't going to any customers with income to spend when millions of Michigan residents have less in their wallets thanks to Snyder's tax increases.

Giving billions to the rich. The governor is trying to create jobs by allowing businesses to have more funds for growth, and the left only thinks the money is going into the CEO's back pocket. Typical short sightedness. Still haven't seen any kind of plan from the left that will create jobs. Come on lefties, give us something to chew on.

Robbing old people and the poor to give Billions to the rich. Yeah, that was a really hard call.

Now lets see how smart Michigan's voting process is. I like some of it, but hate most of it, because it doesn't fit me. I guess they should have asked me first of my opinion. The schools cuts should have been hikes and so on. It is what it is and now we've made our bed. Lets see the show we've been waiting on. Good Luck!

So you would rather they raised taxes on all of us? Or are you one of the "Tax someone else, and leave ME alone" crew?

Business owners get a 90% cut in taxes at the expense of seniors and low-income workers and most other Michigan taxpayers. What a perfect example of the Republican vision of "shared" sacrifice.

John Q - Not even close, but then, facts don't make a good comment. Ford, GM and other large companies will pay more. Small business owners will pay less - but any profit they take out of the business, either as salary or bonus will still be taxed like regular income. So at best the taxes will be reduced from 8.75 percent to 4.35 percent - similar to what an employee pays on their income. But facts are so messy.
